Baseball Edged Out in Doubleheader at Jackson State

2/24/2018 7:10:00 PM | Baseball

EMU had its fourth double-digit hitting effort in seven games in game two

JACKSON, Miss. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team had a pair of tight games, but ultimately dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Jackson State University Saturday, Feb. 24, at Braddy Field. EMU (0-7) lost an early lead in game one, eventually falling 5-3, while JSU (3-1) got off to a 7-0 lead, and never looked back in game two, 8-6.

Game One: Jackson State 5, Eastern Michigan 3

Game one slipped away from the Eagles as a 3-0 lead was lost in the fifth, and JSU got two decisive runs in the seventh. Junior Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice) took the tough loss in a solid second start of the season, going 6.2 innings giving up three earned runs, while striking out three.

Offensively, EMU tallied nine hits in the contest, led by a two-hit outing from redshirt freshman Jeff Timko (Rochester Hills, Mich.-Brother Rice) including a double and RBI. Junior Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) had another productive game, also notching two hits, as well as two runs and two stolen bases, while sophomore Nick Jones (Battle, Creek, Mich.-Lakeview) added two RBIs.

The Eagles jumped on the Tigers early in game one, springing for two runs in the first inning. Sophomore Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown Community) led off with a single, followed by a bloop single from Schuemann to get two on. An RBI groundout from Nick Jones plated the first runner, followed by an RBI single from Timko to make it 2-0 after one.

Eastern added another in the third on another RBI groundout from Nick Jones. Schuemann led off with his second single, and got to third on a steal and error to set up the sophomore catcher with his second run batted in. Feldman tossed his third straight scoreless frame in the bottom of the third to keep it 3-0.

Jackson State broke through in the fourth inning with a pair of runs to tighten the tally to 3-2 into the fifth. They went on to tie the contest in the fifth with another run, making it 3-3 at the midway point.

After a scoreless sixth, the Tigers got the decisive hit in the seventh on a two-run home run, putting them ahead, 5-3, in the late innings. Despite some base runners for the Eagles in the eighth and ninth, they were not able to break through in the two-run defeat.

Game Two: Jackson State 8, Eastern Michigan 6

EMU had its fourth double-digit hitting effort in seven games as they knocked-out 12 among seven players. Nick Jones led the way with three hits, while senior Luke DeVenney (Des Moines, Iowa-Dowling Catholic) had a two-hit, three-RBI contest. Timko added another two-hits to his ledger, including an RBI double, while sophomore Zachary Owings (Saline, Mich.-Saline) had two doubles as well. Finally, Schuemann smacked his second home run of the season, a solo shot, in his only hit of the contest. In seven games, Schuemann is hitting a stellar .516 (16-for-31).

On the mound, a pair of relievers had solid days, starting with freshman Thomas House (Okeana, Ohio-Ross) who tossed 3.1 scoreless innings, only giving up two hits and striking out two. Junior Jackson Shaver (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Northern (Grand Rapids C.C.)) went the final three innings, only surrendering one run on two hits with two K's as well.

The Tigers leapt ahead in the first inning with four runs, and extended the advantage to seven in the second inning.

EMU slowly began to crawl back in it, striking in for four runs in the fourth inning. Schuemann started it with his solo home run to get the Eagles on the board. Later in the frame, Timko doubled in Owings, who reached on a double of his own, to plate the second run. After an error and hit by pitch loaded up the bases, DeVenney delivered a two-RBI single to make it a three-run game, 7-4.

House pitched scoreless fourth and fifth innings to take it to the sixth, where Jackson State got one back on a solo home run, making it 8-4. An uneventful seventh led to the eighth, where EMU got a pair more to cross the plate on a bases loaded walk from sophomore Devin Hager (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and sacrifice fly from DeVenney. Despite getting a base runner on in the ninth, JSU was able to close out the game.

The Green and White conclude its series with JSU, as well as its spring break trip, with a single game tomorrow, Feb. 25. First pitch from Braddy Field is set for 11 a.m. ET.
