Eastern improves to 4-3 by taking down NCAA DII's No. 13 team
EDMOND, Okla. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team kicked off its southwest road trip by taking down the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) No. 13 ranked team in NCAA Division II, the University of Central Oklahoma, 4-3 at Broncho Courts.
"This was definitely a tough match that really tested our mental toughness," said head coach Jayson Wiseman. "UCO is ranked No. 13 in the country in DII for a reason, They play excellent doubles and are extremely talented."
Central Oklahoma got the match going with a win in the doubles point, earning victories at No. 3 and No. 1. Eastern's lone victory came from the senior duo of Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) and Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) at No. 2, who won by a 7-6 final.
The Eagles picked up their game when the match turned to singles, as Gogvadze continued her torrid pace to start the season, winning at No. 1 handily, 6-2, 6-4. Eastern took a 3-1 lead in the match when freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) won the first match of her young collegiate career, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 5, and senior Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) came away with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6. After the Bronchos took wins at No. 4 and No. 3, respectively, junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) came back to win the match-clinching singles pairing at No. 2, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3.
"We came out a little flat and lost the doubles point in 3 very close matches," said Wiseman. "The match really could have gone the other way and been vey ugly for us, but we did a good job of putting the doubles point, the cold, the wind, and travel fatigue out of our minds, and focused on doing what needed to be done to get the win."
"Ani, Alejandra, and Natalia all won handily," he continued. "Marie had to really work to save the match. She fought back from down a set and 4-3 to clinch the win for us. I'm very pleased that he were able to start this extended road trip with a win and will hope that it carries over through our next 7 matches."
Eastern Michigan returns to action Tuesday, Feb. 20 with a pair of matches in the Lonestar State, kicking off with Incarnate Word at 10 a.m. The Eagles will also take on NCAA Division II's St. Mary's at 3 p.m.
