After moving the match indoors, the Eagles swept the Cardinals to move to 5-3
NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University tennis team kicked off the Texas portion of its road trip Tuesday evening with a clean 6-0 sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word at John Newcombe Tennis Ranch.
EMU (5-3) and UIW (0-4) were originally scheduled to play Wednesday morning as part of a two-match day for the Eagles, but inclement weather cancelled the Green and White's match against St. Mary's and moved their match against Incarnate Word indoors.
Because of the venue change, the match began with singles play instead of doubles. Eastern came out firing on all cylinders, sweeping aside the Cardinals with relative ease.
Junior Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) set the tone for the match at No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2. Fresh off her first collegiate victory, freshman Natalia Regalado (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) came away with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 5. Senior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) took her match at No. 4 by a 6-3, 6-2 final, while fellow classmate Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) won at No. 6, 6-3, 6-3.
Eastern had a tougher go of things at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, but were able to come away with victories in the end. Senior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikhani) continued her strong play on the season, winning 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, while freshman Giuliana Ansaloni (Bergamo, Italy-Centro Studi Leonardo Da Vinci) picked up the victory at No. 3 by a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 final.
The Eagles return to action Wednesday, Feb. 21 for a 10 a.m. match at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas.
