Women’s Track and Field Sees Success in Season-Opening Meet

ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team opened the 2018-19 season, Friday, Dec. 7, at the GVSU Holiday Open in Allendale, Mich. EMU was led by four event titles and 13 top-five finishes.

"I thought that it was a solid day for us," head coach Sue Parks said. "Like all first meets, there were ups and downs.  This gives us an idea of what we need to work on over the next five weeks until our next competition.  This is just a starting point.  We will take some good positives out of the day and strive to keep improving with each meet." 
 
The Eagles earned event titles in the 60H, 5000m, and 400m, as freshman Alysse Wade (Mansfield, Ohio-St. Peters), senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), and junior Micah Johnston (Toledo, Ohio-Toledo Christian) each started off their 2018-19 campaigns with first-place finishes.

In her collegiate debut, Wade bested her preliminary heat time of 8.79 by .14 seconds in the finals to earn first place, running the hurdles in just 8.65. Newly elected team captain and redshirt senior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) finished just .01 seconds behind the first-year with a time of 8.66, good for second place. Goff also recorded a career-best time in the 60m with a time of 7.74 in the preliminary heats, and her 7.81 in the final heats was good for eighth place.
 

Meyers opened her senior campaign with a 16:15.04 time in the 5000m event, finishing more than eight seconds before the field of competitors. Redshirt junior Emily Smith (Somerset, England- Wells Cathedral School) was the next Eagles' finisher with a time of 16:26.21, good for seventh place. in sixth and seventh place, respectively. 
 
Johnston paced EMU's 400m efforts with a time of 55.62, followed just .07 seconds later by sophomore Michaela Nelms (Rocky Mount, N.C.-Nash Central), good for second place.

The 60m dash saw each athlete finish in the top-10 performers, as the Eagles swept fifth through eighth place finishes in the event. Team captain and senior Jessica Harris (Slidell, L.a.-Slidell) led the way with a time of 7.64, good for fifth place, followed by juniors Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio-West Geauga) and Kolby Ganther (Park City, Kan.-Northeast Magnet), in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Harris also paced the Eagles in the 200m, placing second overall with a time of 24.91, with Ganther shortly behind her finishing in 25.15, good for third place.
 
EMU closed out the open with a 4x400 Relay win, as freshman Mair Edwards (Basingstoke, England-The Costello School), Johnston, sophomore Keypathwa Gibson (Toledo, Ohio-Roy C. Start), and Nelms recorded the fastest time seen in the conference in the 2018-19 season.
 
Also recording a conference-best performance was Crystal Washington (Los Angeles, Calif.-Carson), earning a third-place triple jump score of 12.00m, more than .65m better than the next conference performer.

Sophomore Kadian Clarke's (Kingston, Jamaica) 17.66m weight throw was good for a fifth-place overall finish, as well as marking the second-furthest throw in program history. 
 
The Green and White will have an extended break from competition, returning to action in the new year when EMU heads down Washtenaw Ave. to participate in the Wolverine Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan, Jan. 12, 2019.
