CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Four student-athletes of Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference honors, the league office announced Thursday, Dec. 6. A total of 46 student-athletes were named to this year's men's team.
The Academic All-MAC honor recognizes student-athletes who excel in both athletics and in academics. To qualify, student-athletes must have a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and run in at least 50 percent of contests.
Receiving the honor for the Eagles were: junior Austin Wicker (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney), and sophomores Ian Cook (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington), Solomon Costa (Gahanna, Ohio-Gahanna Lincoln), and Phoenix Myers (Wattsburg, Pa.-Seneca).
Wicker is a two-time member of the Academic All-MAC team, as he additionally received the honor for his academic and athletic efforts during the 2017 season. The Pinckney, Mich. native is also one of only four runners to hold a perfect 4.0 GPA. Wicker, a nursing major, was EMU's top finisher at the MAC Championship, clocking a time of 25:14.4, good for 19th-place, while also pacing the Eagles at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, earning a 50th-place finish.
Cook earns his first Academic All-MAC nod, as the language, literature, and writing major holds a 3.98 GPA. Cook earned his top finish in his second collegiate season at the Jayhawk Invitational, marking a career-best 8000m time of 26:09.46, finishing 39th overall.
As a business administration major, Costa holds a stellar 3.38 GPA. The Gahanna, Ohio native consistently placed within the top-five for EMU throughout the season, including rounding out the Eagles' 2018 MAC Championship effort with a time of 25:58.3. Costa also earned a season-best 15th place finish at the Detroit Mercy Titan Invitational, crossing the finish line in 21:13.1.
Myers, an engineering major with a 3.50 GPA, made an impact in his second campaign for the Green and White. The Wattsburg, Pa. native earned a personal-best 8k time of 25:46.92 at the Jayhawk Invitational, finishing 28th overall and helping the Eagles to a first-place finish.
