CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University rowing team concluded its fall season at the 36th annual Head of the Hooch, Saturday, Nov. 3 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Eagles raced through heavy fog and a city-wide power outage, putting eight boats on the water in four events, earning five top-15 and two program best finishes.
"I was very happy with the whole team overall today," noted Head Coach Kemp Savage. "I was particularly proud of our varsity members in the championship 8's with huge jumps in both places and speed from last year. Our consistency still has to go up, but this was a good step to making a move up in the spring when we race against conference competition."
EMU began its day entering one boat in the Novice 4+ competition, earning a sixth place finish with a time of 18:50.562.
The full day of racing continued when two Eastern boats entered the Championship 8+ race. The Eagles took sixth and 13th, respectively, finishing with times of 15:28.076 and 16:00.520. Both boats finished with program-best placement, improving from their 2017 12th and 17th finishes.
The Green and White's novice rowers hit the water again in the afternoon, sending two boats to the Novice 8+. There, Eastern Michigan earned its best finish of the day, as the "A" lineup finished in 5th place with a time of 16:33.687, the second-highest finish in school history at the Hooch. The "B" lineup finished 30th, with a time of 19:30.998.
"It was a good day for the novice 8's and 4 lineups, particularly with the two top-seven finishes," Head Novice Coach Delaney McGuire said. "I was proud of the both the Novice 8+ A and 4+ A for their fifth and sixth-place finishes, respectively. Today gave us some good racing under our belt and allowed us to gain a lot of maturity to carry with us into spring competition."
To close out the day's competition schedule, three Eastern Michigan boats raced in the Championship 4+ race. The Eagles' boats finished in 12th, 19th, and 20th place.
Eastern Michigan is now off from competition until 2019. The Eagles kick off 2019 competition when they hit the water March 2 for a scrimmage with the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Keep up to date with all things Eastern Rowing by following the team on Twitter at @EMURowing.
