Wiseman directed EMU to the fifth-seed in the MAC last year with a 16-10 record

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Vice President/Director of Athletics Scott Wetherbee announced today, Nov. 29, the re-hiring of Jayson Wiseman as EMU's Head Women's Tennis Coach. In one season previously at EMU, Wiseman led the Eagles to the fifth-seed in the 2018 Mid-American Conference Tournament with a 16-10 overall record before the program was suspended at the end of 2017-18 academic year.

"We are excited to welcome back Jayson," said Wetherbee. "Last year, he showed that he was able to make our team competitive in the Mid-American Conference and in the region. We look forward to seeing him continue the momentum that he started last year as we restart our tennis program."

Wiseman has made the steady climb up the ranks in the tennis coaching circuit, working at the high school, club, and now collegiate levels. In total, he has seven years of NCAA Division I tennis experience with stops at EMU, Bowling Green State University, Wright State University, and the University of Evansville.

"I'd like to thank Scott Wetherbee and Erin Kido for the opportunity to continue to lead the tennis program here at EMU," added Wiseman. "My family and I are very excited to be back at EMU, working with the amazing staff and student-athletes, and rejoining the EMU athletics family. I look forward to capitalizing on the improvement and success we had last season to build our program into a MAC championship caliber program."

Eastern Michigan will return to action in the Spring of 2019, but will not compete in the Mid-American Conference until the following season.

Last season, Wiseman oversaw a 10-game improvement in the win column from just six in 2016-17 to 16 in 2017-18. Ani Gogvadze became the first Eagle to collect First Team All-MAC honors since 2015, putting together a stellar 20-3 record in duals that included winning her first 16 matches of the season.

Before his arrival in Ypsilanti, Wiseman turned around the Evansville  program in two seasons, going from eight wins in 2015-16 to 17 in 2016-17. Recruiting was the biggest reason for Wiseman's turnaround, as Evansville's 2016 recruiting class was ranked eighth in the mid-majors and 33rd nationally.

After going winless in Missouri Valley Conference play during his inaugural season, Wiseman led Evansville to a second-place finish in the MVC with a 5-2 record the following year.  For their efforts, Diana Tkachenko earned the league's Freshman of the Year award while Chieko Yamada earned a nod on the All-Select Team. Tkachenko completed a spectacular freshman campaign at UE, as she went 31-8 overall and 6-1 in conference play, and earned a final ITA regional ranking of No. 20. Slotted at No. 1 singles for the Purple Aces in 2016-17, Yamada won 18 matches while going an impressive 4-3 in conference matches in the top spot. In the fall of 2017 sophomore Andrea Pascual-Larrinaga gained an ITA national ranking of No. 117, the program's first in 20 years.

Wiseman made his way to Evansville from Wright State where he was an assistant coach for the Raiders in 2015.  He worked with both the men's and women's squads at WSU, and the women's team had the most dual match victories of an team in the Horizon League

From 2005-15, he was the sole proprietor and head professional of his own tennis services company. In that time, he also worked at Stone Oak, Shadow Valley and Toledo Tennis Clubs, serving as an assistant head tennis professional..

He coached at the high school level from 2008-11, leading the boys and girls tennis teams at Sylvania (Ohio) Southview Senior High School.  In his stint there, he coached the school's first four State Tournament participants since 1995 and was named the 2009 Coach of the Year, while leading the girls team to its first league championship.

Between 2004 and 2007, Wiseman worked at Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green as a volunteer assistant coach.  He designed and implemented a comprehensive conditioning program for the team and also operated their annual invitational tournament.  His work with the Falcons also included recruiting, coaching in matches and practice, and various NCAA compliance activities.

Wiseman is a graduate of Ferris State University where he received a B.S. in Marketing and Professional Tennis Management in May of 2002. Wiseman went on to earn a pair of degrees from BGSU. He earned a Master's in Sport Administration in 2011 and an M.C.J.A. in Criminal Justice a year later.
