Tennis Secures 5-2 Road Win at Butler

Eastern is 8-3 after sweeping a weekend road swing through Chicago and Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team received lovely performances all around to secure its second road win of the weekend, this time with a 5-2 victory at Butler University, Feb. 14, inside the IRC East in Indianapolis, Ind. The Eagles (8-3) once again secured the doubles point before adding four wins in singles play to close their five-match road trip with a win over the host Bulldogs (3-6).

"Great win!" Head Coach Ryan Kucera stated after the win. "[A lot of] awesome work by the team to back up yesterday's performance. We really finished the doubles point strong and really got going in crunch time. From there, we had a great start in singles. They showed focus and ability to ride the momentum. I am proud of our freshmen; Cyl, Sabrina, and Matilde were outstanding and just relentless. It was another great team win! I truly am proud of how this young team handled a tough road stretch. We're excited to get back home!"

HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead by securing the doubles points, something it has done in each of its eight wins in 2026. The No. 3 team of Iva Daneva (Kavadarci, North Macedonia/DSU Sportska Akademija) and Regina Mendez Carreño (Los Cabos, Mexico/Picacho McGregor) were first on the board as they secured a 6-3 win. After dropping the match at No. 1, the Eagles scored the deciding victory at No. 2 where Matilde Parreira (Leiria, Portugal/Escola Secundária Afonso Lopes) and Sabrina Tolstova (Odesa, Ukraine/Tennisquick Los Cristianos) captured a 6-3 win to capture the doubles point for the second day in a row.

Tolstova, who clinched the team win one day earlier, was the first to finish her singles match as she raced to a 6-1, 6-0 victory to stake the Eagles to a 2-0 lead. The advantage grew to 3-0 as Cylova Zuleyka Hukmasabiyya (Serang, Indonesia/SMAN 2 Kota Serang) bounced back from a tough three-set loss to score a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 1. After the Bulldogs secured a point with a win at No. 4, Parreira closed the door on the match as she won, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 to give EMU a 4-1 lead. With the match decided, the final two bouts played out with third-set tie-breakers that saw Mendez Carreño win at No. 6, 6-2, 3-6, 1-0(4), before the Eagles dropped their final match at No. 2 for Butler's final point in the 5-2 score.

NOTING THE TEAM
» With the win, the Eagles improved to 8-3 while the Bulldogs fell to 3-6.
» Eastern moved to 6-2 all-time against Butler and snapped a two-match losing streak to the Bulldogs. The Eagles also improved to 4-2 when playing in Indianapolis and snapped a two-match losing streak on the Bulldogs' home courts.
» The Eagles captured the doubles point for the eighth time this year and are 8-0 when winning the point. The win at No. 2 doubles by Matilde Parreira and Sabrina Tolstova marked the fourth time they have clinched the doubles point this season and the second time this weekend.
» The win marked the 32nd for Ryan Kucera as the head coach of the Eagles, which moved him into sole possession of sixth place in program history for wins by a coach. He was previously tied with Allison Tookes, who captured 31 wins in her four seasons (1991-95) in Ypsilanti.
