Eastern Volleyball Falls 3-1 in Hard-Fought Clash at Buffalo

The Eagles fought until the end, but could not get passed the Bulls
BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell in a hard-fought #MACtion battle at the University at Buffalo Friday, Oct. 19, coming out on the short end of a 3-1 final at Alumni Arena.
Both teams performed at a high level for fans, but EMU (13-10, 5-4 MAC) could not get over the hump against UB (13-8, 5-4 MAC) and the home crowd. After winning the first set 30-28, Eastern fell 23-25, 29-31, and 22-25.
Highlighting the match for the Eagles were senior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) and redshirt junior Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central), who each registered 17 kills. Smith also finished with nine digs and three total blocks, while Haut hit at a .344 clip.
Joining Haut and Smith with double-digit kills was sophomore April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest), who finished with 11 to go along with five total blocks.
Both setters for the Green and White played at a high level, with junior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) leading the way with 29 assists and redshirt senior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) adding 23. Taylor picked up a double-double on the night thanks to 17 digs, while also set a season-high for kills with four.
Senior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) highlighted play on the defensive side of the ball, finishing with 35 digs. Joining LaFace and Taylor with double-digit digs was sophomore Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan), who tallied 11 to go along with seven kills.
Eastern returns to action against the MAC East with a 5 p.m. match at the University of Akron Saturday, Oct. 19.
