The Eagles fall back to .500 on both the season and in MAC play

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell at the hands of a tough Western Michigan University squad 3-1 (15-20, 25-18, 23-25, 20-25) Saturday, Sept. 30, to drop back to .500 on both the season and in Mid-American Conference play.

The Eagles (10-10, 2-2 MAC) were held in check by a strong Broncos (11-4, 4-0 MAC) defense, as EMU hit just .177 for the match and were out-blocked 9-5. WMU finished the match with a .247 attack percentage

EMU's attack was led by redshirt sophomore Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central), who had 10 kills with a .368 attack percentage. Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) also had 10 kills, chipped in four digs and had two service aces. Redshirt junior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) had a double-double of 24 assists and 10 digs, while fellow junior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) led the Eagles with 20 digs.

Western Michigan jumped ahead in the first set thanks to an early 3-0 run as well as a 4-0 run later to get a lead it would never relinquish, ultimately winning 25-15. The Broncos hit an outstanding .500 in the set, while Eastern Michigan was only able to attack at a .138 percentage.

EMU bounced back with an impressive performance of its own in the second set, holding WMU to just .233 in the set while hitting .480 themselves. The Eagles evened the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 victory.

Eastern Michigan started the third set with a 4-0 run, and led by as many as six before Western Michigan bounced back with a 5-0 run of its own. In the end, the Broncos were able to rally past the Eagles and take the important third set, 25-23.

Western Michigan took a four-point lead early in the final set thanks to a 5-1 run, and the home team would never let the Green and White get any closer the rest of the way.

The Broncos finished the match with an advantage in digs (74-62), assists (55-42), blocks (9-5), and kills (59-43). The Eagles are now 0-4 on the season when out-blocked by their opponent.

Eastern Michigan returns to action Thursday, Oct. 5 when it welcomes Central Michigan to the Convocation Center for its annual Dig Pink match at 7 p.m. The Eagles also host Ohio in MAC play  Saturday, Oct. 7.
