Eagles Fall Short in Five Sets Versus Chippewas

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was edged out in five sets by in-state rival Central Michigan University Thursday night, Oct. 5, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles (10-11, 2-3 MAC) won the first set, but fell short late, dropping the match, 3-2 (26-24, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 11-15).
Eastern Michigan tallied a total of 61 kills and hit at a .165 clip, but Central Michigan notched 72 kills and held a .231 attacking percentage for the match. Freshman Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan), redshirt sophomore Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic), and seniors Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont (Austin Peay)) and Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch) registered double digit kills. Strefling paced the Eagles with a career-high 19 kills, while Haut and Ferguson added 11 each. Falco chipped in 10 kills on a team-best .381 attacking percentage.
Defensively, CMU out-blocked EMU 13-10, while digs were even at 84. Junior Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) recorded a match-high 21, her seventh 20-plus dig performance of the season. Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) fell just short of the 20-dig mark, finishing with 19 digs, two shy of her career-high.
Redshirt junior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) and sophomore Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) each recorded double-doubles while splitting the setting duties. Rajewski dished out a team-best 34 assists to go along with 12 digs, and Taylor added in 19 assists and 11 digs. It was Rajewski's 25th career double-double and the second of the season for Taylor.
Eastern Michigan outhit Central .196-.178 en route to a 26-24 opening set win. After trading points early on, the Eagles jumped out to a 15-13 lead and forced the Chippewas to take a timeout. Out of the break, a key block by Falco and an ace by Smith extended EMU's lead to four, 17-13. The Chippewas clawed their way back to tie the set at 24 all, but an outstanding dig by LaFace led to a set-clinching kill by Strefling.
CMU evened the match at one set apiece, as EMU dropped the second set 25-21 as the offense stalled. Central cranked out 14 kills and hit a blistering .263, while Eastern managed 12 kills but hit at a .079 clip.
With the match level out of intermission, the Green and White overcame a strong start by the Chippewas to regain the lead in the match. Behind in the early goings, EMU stepped up defensively. For the set, Eastern tallied five team blocks, while Central registered just one.
The Eagles fell behind from the start in the fourth set and Central Michigan evened the match at 2-2. Despite the Eagles hitting at a .222 clip, the Chippewas offense registered 17 kills with a .255 attacking percentage to force a fifth set.
In the fifth set, the Chippewas used a 6-0 run to take a commanding 8-4 lead and never looked back. The Eagles stayed within four for a majority of the set, but came up short, 15-11.
Eastern Michigan returns to action at home Saturday, Oct. 7, against Ohio University. First serve between EMU and OU is set for 5 p.m. from the Convocation Center.
