SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – A challenging opening round at the University of Louisville's Cardinal Challenge has left the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team in 10th-place following day one of play. The Eagles shot an 11-over 299 on the first 18 holes of play at the University of Louisville Golf Club Friday, Sept. 29, sitting a stroke behind Southeastern Louisiana and Winthrop in a tie for eighth.
Freshman Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary), who sits tied for 17th in the 79-player field, leads EMU after the first round where he shot a one-over 73. Junior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and sophomore Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin) posted an opening-round score of three-over 75 and are tied for 38th. Freshman Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic) is tied for 42nd place on the leaderboard after tallying a score of 76. Senior Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) sits tied for 65th after shooting a seven-over 79 on the par-72, 7,192-yard course.
Taking part as an individual and making his collegiate debut, freshman Tyler Rayman (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) shot a 77 in a tie for 54th.
Miami University leads the 13-team field after posting a team score of four-under 284, followed by host Louisville in second place with a one-day total of two-under 286 and Louisiana-Lafayette in third (292).
Four players are tied for the top spot on the leaderboard as Louisville's Simon Zach and Erik Dulik, an individual competitor, along with Louisiana-Lafayette's Triston Elston and Miami University's Patrick Flavin each claimed a round one score of four-under 68.
The Eagles will tee off tomorrow from hole No. 10 starting at 10:10 a.m. with the last player teeing off at 10:50 a.m. Live scoring of the tournament can be found at Golfstat.com.
