Eagles Split Second Day of UniWyo Invitational

EMU Swept Jacksonville 3-0 after falling 0-3 to No. 21 Purdue

LARAMIE, Wyo. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team split its final day of the UniWyo Invitational, falling 3-0 (18-25, 19-25, 19-25) to No. 21 Purdue before bouncing back to take down Jacksonville 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-22) Saturday, Sept. 2, at the UniWyo Sports Complex.

The Eagles (3-4) were held in check by the No. 21 ranked Boilermakers (5-0) in the first game of the day, hitting -.044 for the match and producing just 23 total kills. In the nightcap, however, the story was just the opposite, as EMU attacked .289 for the set with 41 kills to take down the Dolphins (2-4).

UPDATE: Senior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts on the weekend. Overall, the Illinois native had 16 kills and nine blocks in three matches, including a season-best 12 kills in EMU's win over Jacksonville.

Eastern Michigan 0 Purdue 3

Junior Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the team in both kills and digs with 10 and seven respectively. Smith and sophomore Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) each had two service aces, while Taylor had the team high in assists with 12.

Purdue showed why its one of the Top 25 teams in the nation, jumping out to a 7-2 advantage out of the gate and leading by as many as 12 points before finishing the first set at 25-14. EMU hit just .091 percent in the set.

Eastern Michigan put up a better fight in the second set, hitting .174 percent and keeping the score close early. Right after EMU tied the score at 9-9, the Boilermakers went on a 7-0 run to effectively put the game out of reach. The Eagles would get no closer than seven the rest of the way, eventually falling 25-15.

EMU saved its best play for the final set, giving Purdue fits throughout its entirity. The No. 21 ranked Boilermakers could not pull ahead further than five points, and the Eagles made it interesting late, coming within two points at 21-19. Purdue, however, rattled off four consecutive points to finish the match.

Eastern Michigan 3 Jacksonville 0

The Eagles wasted no time in improving their all-time record to 4-0 against Jacksonville, jumping out to an 8-3 lead early on and never looking back. EMU hit an eye-popping .500 in the opening set, led by senior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont), who had four kills in four chances (1.000 percent). The Dolphins connected on just .154 percent of their attacks in the set.

Set two was much of the same for Eastern Michigan, after recovering from a slow start. The Eagles trailed 4-0 off the bat, but battled back and tied the score at 10-10. EMU used two separate 3-0 runs to build the lead up late, and went on a 4-0 run to end the set. Ferguson continued to lead the way for the Eagles, adding four more kills with a .600 attack percentage.

Jacksonville erased an early third-set deficit with a 5-0 run, but Eastern Michigan recovered and once again saw the score tied mid-way through the match. EMU was able to inch ahead, but never by more than four points. With the Eagles holding a one-point lead at 22-21, Eastern was able to hold off JU the rest of the way, coming out on top 25-22.

"The team really performed well against Jacksonville," said head coach Kimi Olson. "Our execution was phenomenal is set one and were able to carry that momentum all the way through the match to get the sweep.  Our setters played an excellent match and really ran an efficient offense. We were running in all cylinders most of the match." 

Ferguson paced all Eagles with 12 kills in the match, while Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) chipped in nine. Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) had her third double-double of the season, leading the team with 19 assists and also chipping in 14 digs. Libero Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) led both teams with 16 digs.

Eastern Michigan returns to action Friday, Sept. 8, Saturday, Sept. 9 and Sunday, Sept. 10 at the Towson Tiger Invitational. The first day of the invitational includes a 10 a.m. match with Quinnipiac and a 2:30 p.m. bout with George Mason.
