DETROIT (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University soccer team closed out non-conference play with 3-0 defeat to the University of Detroit Mercy Sunday, Sept. 17, at Titan Field.
The Eagles were outshot by a 10-8 margin, despite holding a 4-3 edge in corners. The Titans put a total of seven shots on frame, compared to the Eagles' three shots on goal.
The first half was a battle in the midfield as each team recorded just three shots. Set pieces gave Detroit Mercy the upper hand, as the Titans put two shots on frame.
Despite a few close calls, the game remained scoreless into the 28th minute, but an EMU miscue gave UDM a free kick inside of midfield. Serving up a cross from 35 yards out, the ball was sent to the back post and headed in for the go-ahead goal.
The Eagles pieced together a few opportunities in the final 15 minutes of the half but came up empty.
Goals in the 48th and 57th minutes quickly pushed the Titans lead to 3-0, as the Eagles were caught on their heels in the early part of the second half.
Struggling to maintain possession, Eastern Michigan could not cut into the deficit. Sophomore Mabel Dunn (Oakville, Ontario-White Oaks Secondary) made a career-high three saves off the bench as EMU dropped the match, 3-0.
With non-conference play in the rearview mirror, Eastern turns its attention to Mid-American Conference play next weekend, Sept. 22-24. EMU begins the weekend on the road against Ohio University, before taking on Kent State University, Sept. 24. Kickoff between the Eagles and Bobcats is set for 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 22.
