The Eagles lost a 1-nil lead in the 90th minute
ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team opened up Mid-American Conference play on the road Friday, Sept. 22, against the Bobcats of Ohio University at Chessa Field. The Eagles (3-6-1, 0-1-0 MAC) were spurned by a pair of late Bobcat goals, as the Green and White lost an early lead and fell, 2-1, in overtime.
Ohio held a 18-14 lead in shots, but Eastern put eight shots on frame compared to OU's seven. The Eagles garnered six corners, while holding the Bobcats to two. Defensively, junior keeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made five saves.
Imposing its physicality, Eastern Michigan ripped off three shots, two of which were on frame, over the first 15 minutes. Freshman Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) and sophomore Nicole Remedios (Ajax, Ontario-Archbishop Dennis O'Connor) combined for one shot one frame a piece, but a pair of saves by Ohio's keeper kept the game scoreless.
The Eagles kept the pressure on behind the aggressive play of Olson and the stout defensive effort of Williams, but could not find the back of the net, leaving the match scoreless at the half.
All of the scoring came in the final 20 minutes, as freshman Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) found the back of the net for the first time in her EMU career. Shira's 71st-minute strike gave the Eagles a 1-nil lead that last until the final minute of regulation.
Pressing for an equalizer with the time ticking down, Ohio buried a shot with less than 40 seconds to even the score at one.
In overtime, the Bobcats wasted little time, registering the game-winner 36 seconds into the extra time period, stunning the Eagles and taking the match, 3-1.
Eastern Michigan continues its tour of the MAC East Division Sunday, Sept. 24, versus Kent State University. Kickoff between the Eagles and Golden Flashes is slated for 1 p.m. at Dix Stadium.
