Eagles' Offense Stalls in Loss to Golden Flashes

Junior Kaylin Williams tied a season-high with seven saves

KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Playing through the heat, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team could not overcome a 26th-minute strike by Kent State University Sunday, Sept. 24, in Mid-American Conference cross-divisional action. The Eagles (3-7-1, 0-2-0 MAC) were handed a 1-nil setback by the Golden Flashes (6-3-1, 2-0-0 MAC), the fourth straight loss for EMU, after putting just three shots on goal.

The Eagles struggled to get things going offensively, totaling just eight shots in the match, the second-fewest in a match this season. Meanwhile, the Golden Flashes recorded 15 shots and held a 6-3 edge in corners, marking just the second time this season Eastern has not earned more corners than its opponent. Defensively, junior Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) tied a season-high with seven saves.

Neither team mustered many real scoring chances in the first 15 minutes, as the two teams battled for possession in the midfield. That all changed in the 25th minute, as Kent State gained an early 1-nil lead on a goal from the right side of the box.

EMU recorded just one shot in the first 45 minutes, doing so in the 33rd minute, despite possession being fairly even. The lone attempt at goal came on a cross from freshman Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville). Olson's service to the near post was met by the head of junior Peyton Davis (North Ridegville, Ohio-Holy Name), but the shot bent wide.

The Golden Flashes kept the Eagles' defense busy over the final 20 minutes of the period. KSU earned two corners and a fired off six shots, but a three-save half by Williams and the EMU defense kept the score at 1-nil into the break.

The Green and White got after it right from the whistle in the second half, taking it to the Golden Flashes from the kickoff. Playing a ball over the top, Olson corralled it at the edge of the 18 and ripped a shot on frame that was stopped by KSU's keeper. Gathering the rebound, redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) sent a shot right back at goal, but it soared high.

Eastern pieced together another solid opportunity later in the match, courtesy of a corner. Delivering a corner service to the middle of the 18, Olson connected with junior Mikayla Cupp (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) but the header curled wide.

Williams made a total of four saves in the second half to keep the Eagles within striking distance, but a late push fell short as EMU fell, 1-nil.

Eastern Michigan returns to Scicluna Field for week two of Mid-American Conference play, as EMU plays host to the University at Buffalo Friday, Sept. 29. Kickoff between the Eagles and Bulls is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Ypsilanti.
