Four Eagles finished within the top-50
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team finished fourth out of 17 total teams at the Commodore Classic, Saturday, Sept. 16, in Nashville, Tenn. EMU saw two harriers finish within the top-five in the form of senior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich.-Davison) and redshirt senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia-Lyceum #83).
"We were definitely looking for a better team finish," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "It was a hot day and a couple of the girls struggled with the conditions but it was the same for everyone. We had a few bright spots but overall, it was not the team finish that we were hoping for."
McDermitt led the Green and White, placing second in 17:29.3, which was only topped by Missouri's Karissa Schweizer, who set a new record time for the event. Bogdanova placed fifth with a time of 17:36.8, while senior Jenna Wyns (Londerzeel, Belgium-Sportschool KA2), redshirt juniors Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley) and Allie Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Warren Mott), as well as freshman Ashleigh Simonis (Cape Town, South Africa-Milnerton) also put together strong performances, as each finished within the top-50 of the field, which included 176 total runners.
EMU ran 10 harriers and finished with 123 points. Ohio State placed first in the event, while Vanderbilt and Missouri rounded out the top-three, respectively.
"This is a hard working team with a lot of talent and it is still early in the season," added Parks. "We're looking forward to two good weeks of training and some good improvement as a group before we head to Notre Dame."
The Eagles will have a break from competition next week, but return to action Friday, Sept. 29 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
