EMU Volleyball Swept By Wyoming to Open UniWyo Invitational

The Eagles lost 18-25, 19-25, 19-25 to open up weekend play
LARAMIE, Wyo. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off its weekend at the UniWyo Invitational with a 3-0 (18-25, 19-25, 19-25) loss at the hands of Wyoming on Friday night, Sept. 1, at the UniWyo Sports Complex.
The Eagles (2-3) were held in check by the host Cowgirls (2-2), hitting -.044 for the match and producing just 23 total kills. Wyoming hit .276 as a team and finished with 41 kills.
Freshman Frankie Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan), redshirt sophomore Cassie Haut (Monroe Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central), and senior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont) co-led the team with four kills each, while Ferguson combined with sophomore Ariel Hamby (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) for three total blocks.
EMU struggled to contain Wyoming's firepower, falling behind in the first set 10-3 and never fully recovering, only getting within five points the rest of the way. Eastern finished with an attack percentage of -.036 percent in the first set and limited Wyoming to .200 clip.
The second set was back-and-forth early on, with the Eagles trailing by just two at 14-12, but the Cowgirls rallied off eight of the next 12 points to take a controlling 23-16 lead. EMU would get it back to a five-point deficit at 23-18, but could not get any closer, falling 25-19 in the set. The attacking woes continued for Eastern Michigan in the set, hitting -.069 (seven kills, nine errors), while Wyoming improved its overall attack with a .278 (13 kills, three errors).
After falling behind 7-3 to start the third set, Eastern Michigan rallied back to make the score 7-6, but Wyoming responded with a run of their own, taking eight of the next nine points and putting the match firmly in hand. The Eagles slowly inched their way back into the match, but got no closer than four points the rest of the way.
Eastern Michigan returns to action in day two of the UniWyo Invitational with a 12 p.m. match against No. 21 ranked Purdue and a 7 p.m. bout with Jacksonville.
