The 2016 MAC Champions will take part in seven regular season meets

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - John Goodridge, head coach of the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team, announced the team's 2017 schedule today, Aug. 28. The Eagles will take part in seven regular season meets, highlighted by two very tough meets, before beginning the postseason with the Mid-American Conference Championships in late October.

"The Michigan Open will be an opportunity for most of our freshmen to experience their first collegiate competition as well as an opportunity for some of our middle distance runners to evaluate their strength for 5000 meters," said Goodridge. "This will literally be their first day of practice as Eastern Michigan Eagles so it also serves as my first evaluation measure."

The Green and White kick off the 2017 slate with the Michigan Open, Sept. 1, in Dexter Mich. The following week, the Eagles take a trip back to the Titan Invitational, Sept. 9, for the fourth consecutive season. From there, the EMU remains in the state of Michigan, for the MSU Spartan Classic the following weekend, Sept. 15. Like the Titan Invite, this also marks the fourth year in a row that EMU will head to East Lansing for the early season meet.

From there, the Green and White head down to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational, Sept. 29. The Eagles have been attending the meet annually since 2006, as this will mark the 12th straight year that EMU will be in attendance with some of the top teams in the nation.

After a quick break, Eastern returns to action at the Nuttycombe Invitational, Oct. 14, hosted by the University of Wisconsin, marking the second straight year that the Green and White will head to Madison, Wis. for the meet. Similar to the Notre Dame Invitational, many of the top squads from around the nation will be in attendance, allowing the team to gain experience against other top runners before the postseason.

The Eagles close out the regular season with the annual EMU Fall Classic, Oct. 20, as they head back to Dexter, Mich. This meet will give the team one final opportunity to gain experience before the postseason begins the following weekend.

The postseason then kicks off, as Eastern Michigan heads to Oxford, Ohio and the campus of Miami University for the 2017 MAC Championships. EMU will have the opportunity to capture its eighth consecutive conference title, in addition to vying for the team's 22nd championship in program history after posting a perfect score last year. Finally, a win would also give Goodridge his 13th MAC title, furthering his lead as the winningest coach in league history.

Eastern then has a free weekend, followed by a trip to Terre Haute, Ind. and Indiana State University for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 10. Last season, the Eagles had a very strong performance at the regional, finishing fourth with 99 points. A trio of Eagles also earned all-region honors based on their performances.

Depending on their NCAA Regional finish, the team will either conclude their season at the regional, or will move on to the NCAA Championships, held Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky. In order to punch their tickets to the national championship, the team will need to either secure a top-two finish at the regional, or be selected as an at-large bid.
