INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com)
— The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team split its opening matches of 2017 against Oakland University and Robert Morris University Friday, Aug. 25, at the Butler Tournament. The Eagles dropped their first match of the season to the Golden Grizzlies, 3-1 (22-25, 25-16, 25-27, 11-25), before sweeping the Colonials, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-21).

In EMU's first match of the season, redshirt sophomore Cassie Haut (Monroe, Mich.-St. Mary Catholic Central) led the Eagles attack with 13 kills in her return after missing the entire 2016 campaign, while junior Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) tallied a team-high 21 assists. Sophomore Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) paced the team with 15 total digs. However, the Green and White struggled to find consistency on the attacking end, finishing with a .132 hitting percentage. The Eagles led the Golden Grizzlies in aces (five) and blocks (13) but were edged in kills, assists, and digs.

The match saw 12 different Eagles receive playing time, including newcomers Alejandra Sanabria (Coconut Creek, Fla.-Polk State), April Houston (Minneapolis, Minn.-Southwest), and the first-career start for freshman Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan). Strefling tied a match-high in aces with two.

Oakland started the match with the first point and was able to hold the lead for the majority of the opening set, although both teams kept it close as the lead never reached more than four points.  The Eagles were able to erase Oakland's advantage, tying the set at 14 apiece with a kill from Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont). After dropping to a 20-16 score in favor of the Grizzlies, the Eagles scored two consecutive points and forced Oakland into their first timeout of the set. Oakland was able to outscore EMU, 5-4, out of the timout, taking the first set, 25-22.

The Eagles jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in set two with a kill from Rajewski and an attacking error from Oakland's Sammy Condon. The Grizzlies battled back to take the lead with an attacking error from Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch Community), making the score 4-3. After battling back and forth the Eagles used five straight points from the help of four consecutive Oakland attacking errors, taking the lead and bringing the score to 11-8. The Eagles continued their momentum and stretched the lead to 17-10. The Grizzlies managed to chip away and reduce EMU's lead to five points, but ultimately fell in the second set, 25-16.

EMU began the third set right where they left off, with a kill from Falco. However, the lead was short-lived as Oakland came back to take the lead, 3-2. There were three lead changes early in the third set before EMU was able to gain control and force Oakland into a timeout with a 10-8 lead. Out of the timeout, the Eagles continued to apply pressure, scoring three-straight points and forcing the Grizzlies to quickly take their second timeout. Oakland's second timeout of the set proved to be more helpful than the first, resulting in four-straight OU points and an EMU timeout, with the Eagles up, 13-12. The set remained close as the teams traded points, holding a 20-20 tie going into the final stretch. A crucial Oakland attacking error followed by Strefling's second ace of the day seprated the score 22-20. The Grizzlies came back and scored two-straight to tie the set at 22 and force Eastern into a late timeout. Oakland's Courtney Wightman came out of the EMU timeout with a critical ace, only to be answered by a kill from Ariel Hamby (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest). The teams remained locked up at 25-25 before Oakland's Jordan Lentz came in with a clutch kill, which was followed by an EMU attacking error, ending the set in favor of OU, 27-25.

The Eagles began the fourth set the same as they did the second, scoring the first two points before watching the Grizzlies come back to make the score to 4-3 in their favor. Oakland was able to extend to a four point edge early, and held the lead until the Eagles were forced to take a timeout down, 13-9. From that point on Oakland took over as they outscored EMU, 7-1, in an eight-point stretch, making the score 20-10. Struggling to get going, the Eagles dropped the fourth set 25-11 and fell to Oakland, 3-1.

Defense was a big factor in EMU's sweep against Robert Morris, as they held the Colonials to a .032 hitting percentage while hitting at a .228 clip. Smith led the Eagles in kills and digs with 12 apiece, while also contributing three blocks. Falco led the Green and White on the defensive end, tallying nine total blocks. Rajewski notched a team-high 25 assists, pushing her career total over 1,300.

EMU quickly claimed a 5-2 lead in the first set with kills from Haut, Hamby, and Falco. Robert Morris kept the game close and managed to surge back to secure an 8-7 lead over the Eagles. However, EMU quickly took back the reigns, earning 10 points over a 12-point stretch, pushing their lead to 17-10. The Colonials fought back to cut EMU's lead to four at 22-18, but three-straight RMU attack errors gave the Eagles a 25-18 win in the first set.

The Eagles struggled to get out in front in the second set, as the Colonials grabbed the lead early and held onto it until EMU tied the set 15-15. A late surge which included EMU capturing six of the next seven points gave the Eagles a 21-16 lead and forced RMU to take a late timeout. The late push proved to be too much for the Colonials, ultimately leading to a 25-18 EMU victory. The Eagles ended the set by taking 10 of the last 13 points.

The Colonials got out to another quick start, expanding their lead early with an 8-5 start. The Eagles were able to slowly cut down on RMU's lead, with back-to-back kills from Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) and a huge kill from Falco to bring Robert Morris' lead within one at 12-11. RMU was able to keep the lead late into the set, holding a 18-15 edge, but the Eagles went on a late surge, scoring four-straight points to take the lead for the first time at 19-18. A kill by Falco followed by two Colonial attacking errors ended the set 25-21 to complete the EMU sweep.

Eastern Michigan volleyball returns to Hinkle Fieldhouse Saturday, Aug. 26, to close out the opening weekend with a pair of matches. The Eagles will take on Stony Brook at 2 p.m. and will conclude with a match against tournament-host Butler at 7 p.m.
