The senior is the first EMU player picked since 2012
SEATTLE, Wash. (EMUEagles.com) — Former Eastern Michigan University right handed pitcher Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) was selected in the 23rd round, 693rd overall, by the Seattle Mariners in the 2017 MLB Draft, Wednesday afternoon, June 14. Delaplane becomes the first EMU player since 2012 to hear his name called in the draft.
Overall, Delaplane is the 74th EMU player all-time to be drafted into the MLB, and just the second to the Mariners, the first being Ken Spratke in 1984. The 23rd round is also the earliest an Eagle player has been selected since Jimmy Gulliver went in the 20th round in 2009.
Delaplane wrapped up a stellar EMU career with a great 2017 campaign, finishing with First-Team All-MAC honors. The senior led EMU as the Friday starter, finishing with a team-best 3.27 ERA in 20 appearances, including 11 starts, totaling 85.1 innings. He finished with 92 strikeouts, the ninth most in a single season in EMU history, while finishing second on EMU with four wins. His ERA ranked fifth in the conference, while he was also second in strikeouts.
For his career, he finished with 210 punch-outs, becoming just the 11th EMU player to eclipse the 200-strikeout plateau, finishing eighth all-time. In addition, he racked up 10 saves in his time donning the Green and White, which was good for fifth all-time, while his 16 wins were tied for 16th.
At the conclusion of the season, Delaplane earned his third straight Academic All-MAC award. He graduated in the spring with his degree in marketing, finishing with a 3.62 GPA.
