The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team capped off the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships today, May 13, ultimately finishing in second as a team with 140 points. In total, the Eagles picked up nine top-three finishes on the final day of competition, including a pair of event titles in the 200m and the 5000m.

The Green and White had some strong performances in the sprints finals, led off by junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson), who secured a third-place finish in the 100m dash finals with a career-best time of 10.48 seconds. The highlight for Antonio, however, came in the 200m finals, where he finished atop the podium after clocking in at a career-best 21.00 seconds. Sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) ran in the 400m finals, just missing a top-three placing after crossing the finish line in 47.94 seconds to take fourth.

Moving to the mid-distance events, junior Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) was the lone Eagle in the 800m finals. The Racalmas, Hungary native finished eighth in the race, posting a time of 1:54.86. A trio of Eagles competed in the 1500m, however, as redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) brought home yet another medal for EMU. Fink snagged third, posting a time of 3:49.15, while Matko finished sixth.

The distance squad was able to complete a sweep of the 5000m, as the Green and White secured all three medals in the event. Fink led the way once again, winning the race in 14:38.22 to narrowly edge out teammate redshirt junior Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven),who was a hair behind him with a time of 14:38.23. Rounding out the sweep was fellow redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland – Mountain Ridge), the bronze medalist with a time of 14:50.91.

In the 4x100m relay, the Eagles claimed fifth in 43.24 seconds, while the 4x400m squad took fourth in 3:19.88, coming just shy of a podium spot. Redshirt senior Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio – Fairfield Senior) capped off his final MAC Championships on a high note, taking third in the 110m hurdles finals after clocking in at 14.45 seconds. Sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio – Eastmoor Academy) added another bronze to EMU's medal count, as she also took third in the 400m hurdles finals with a time of 55.21 seconds.

EMU secured a top-three finish in the high jump, as sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) took home the bronze after notching a mark of 2.05 meters/ 6 feet 8.5-inches, which was just short of his career-best. Fellow sophomore Micah Peters (York, Ontario – Vaughn Road Academy) took part in the triple jump, snagging fifth with a jump of 14.81 meters/ 48 feet 7-inches, which was an outdoor personal-best.

Both Eagle competitors in the discus posted career-best marks. Redshirt freshman Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla. – Edmond Memorial) led the way with a seventh-place finish, posting a throw of 49.08 meters/ 161 feet 0.25-inches, crushing his previous career-best by nearly four meters. Freshman Jannik Schmitt (Plymouth, Mich. – Salem) took 12th, launching a personal-best 45.67 meters/ 149 feet 10-inches.

Following the meet, Fink was named the Men's Most Valuable Performer for his excellent performance throughout the three-day meet. Four Eagles brought home First Team All-MAC honors, with Antonio, Fink, redshirt junior Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason), and sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. - Parkland) all receiving the accolade. In addition, Andresson, Bouchikhi, and redshirt senior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio - Sandusky) were named to the second team.

This marks the conclusion of the season for a majority of the team, while select individuals may continue on to the NCAA East Regional, May 25-27, based on national rankings in each event.
