Fink Claims 3000m Steeplechase Title on Day Two of MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team rolled on with day two of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships today, May 12, in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Eagles, who now sit second with 63 points, finished the day with the 3000m steeplechase event title, while six student-athletes also earned spots in their respective event finals.
In the 100m dash prelims, junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) had a strong race, coming just shy of first and securing second with a time of 10.62 seconds, which was good for a spot in tomorrow's finals. Antonio also punched his ticket to the 200m dash finals after taking second in the prelims with a time of 21.34 seconds, while sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) advanced as well after nabbing fourth in 21.58. Rounding out the sprints, two Eagles advanced to the 400m finals. Underwood also finished fifth in the 400m dash prelims, clocking in at 48.21 seconds, while freshman Trevor Marcus (Dublin, Ohio – Dublin Jerome) snuck in with an eighth-place finish after posting a personal-best time of 49.97 seconds.
The 800m prelims featured three EMU mid-distance runners, with one finishing in the top-eight and qualifying into the finals. Junior Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) was the lone Eagle to accomplish the feat, as he took seventh in a career-best 1:52.10. Despite not advancing to the finals, junior Tom Jozwiak (Southgate, Mich. – Thomas J. Anderson) turned in a personal-best outdoor performance, crossing the finish line in 1:55.10.
Two Eagles also advanced in the 110m hurdles. Freshman Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y. – Westland) nabbed his finals spot after snagging fourth in the prelims with a personal-best time of 14.67 seconds, while redshirt senior Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio – Fairfield Senior) took eighth in 14.65 seconds. In the 400m hurdles prelims, sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio – Eastmoor Academy) earned a finals berth as well, crossing the finish line in seventh with a time of 55.50 seconds.
Eastern dominated in the 3000m steeplechase, taking home both first and second-place. Redshirt senior Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio – Maumee) successfully defended his title from a year ago, finishing atop the podium after clocking in at 8:54.88. Just behind him, redshirt junior Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) took home the silver, posting a personal-best time of 8:56.54.
EMU competed in a pair of field events as well. In the long jump, sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) crushed his previous career-best, jumping 7.45 meters/ 24 feet 5.25-inches to take home fifth. His mark was an improvement of .40 meters in comparison to his previous outdoor record. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. – Avondale) took part in the shot put, walking away with an 11th-place finish after launching 14.94 meters/ 49 feet.
With day two of the MAC Championships now finished, the Eagles wrap up the conference championships tomorrow, May 13. Day three is scheduled to get rolling at 10 a.m. with the men's discus.
