Eagles Break Javelin Record on Day Two in Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team continued action at the Tennessee Relays, Friday, April 7. The highlight of day two came in the javelin, where the EMU record fell yet again at the hands of sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland).

Eastern had a sprinter finish in the top-10 of the 100m dash, as junior Leighton Antonio (Hudson, Ohio – Hudson) secured eighth after tying his personal-best with a time of 10.68 seconds. Redshirt senior Nick James (Troy, Ohio – Troy) was able to take 24th in 10.94 seconds, while freshman Sean Beckom (Saginaw, Mich. – Heritage) nabbed 27th. EMU also had a strong showing in the 200m dash, as Antonio took home another top-10 finish. Specifically, the Hudson, Ohio native nabbed seventh with a career-best time of 21.47 seconds.

In the 400m dash, sophomore Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich. – Clinton) had a very strong race, as he took home fourth, and first in his heat, after clocking in with a personal-best time of 47.93 seconds, which was .01 seconds quicker than his mark from last week. Redshirt senior Jason Ervin (Farmington Hills, Mich. – Farmington) finished in the top-20 as well, snagging 19th in 49.85 seconds.

Freshman Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga. – Blanche Ely) led the Green and White in the 800m run, securing a 21st-place finish after crossing the finish line in 1:56.71. Just two spots behind him, fellow freshman Dan Kuhn (Erie, Pa. – Harbor Creek) finished 23rd with a time of 1:57.18. In the 1500m run, junior Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) came up just shy of his personal-best, as he clocked in at 3:51.37 to finish 11th. Additionally, redshirt junior Caleb Hess (Owosso, Mich. – Owosso) posted a career-best time of 3:55.19, finishing 20th.

Redshirt junior Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. – River Falls) had a strong showing in the 5000m, as he finished fourth after posting a time of 14:26.19, which was just less than two seconds away from his personal-best. Additionally, fellow redshirt junior Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio – Defiance) finished within the top-15, taking 15th after clocking in at 14:36.91, which was a career-best.

A pair of Eagles competed in the 110m hurdles. Redshirt senior Bryce Lindsey (New Middletown, Ohio – Fairfield Senior) led the way, as he finished fifth with a time of 14.55 seconds. Also donning the Green and White in the race was freshman Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y. – Westland), who took eighth after clocking in at 14.75 seconds, which was a personal-best. Sophomore Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio –Eastmoor Academy) was the top EMU finisher in the 400m hurdles, as he crossed the finish line in 55.83 seconds to finish 13th.

In the pole vault, freshman Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio – Edgerton) finished fifth, as he posted a vault of 4.65 meters/ 15 feet 3-inches. Sophomore Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio – Bishop Hartley) was able to secure a career-best outdoor long jump mark, as he took home sixth after jumping 7.21 meters/ 23 feet 8-inches.

Finally, in the throws section of the day, redshirt sophomore Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich. – Avondale) took 18th in the shot put with a launch of 15.38 meters/ 50 feet 5.5-inches. The highlight of the day, however, came in the javelin, where Ziegenfuss broke the EMU record yet again. This time around, the sophomore finished second, notching a career-best and program record throw of 67.76 meters/ 222 feet 4-inches.

The Eagles wrap up the Tennessee Relays tomorrow, April 8, beginning at 10 a.m with the women's discus. The men will start at 11 a.m. with the men's invite pole vault, while running events will be kicked off by the women's 4x200m relay at noon.
