COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team began the Jesse Owens Invitational today, April 21, in Columbus, Ohio. The Eagles had a strong opening day with one running event and a pair of throwing events.

Eastern had two runners finish within the top-five of the 1500m run. Senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) snagged the bronze, clocking in with a time of 4:25.18. Just behind her, sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) secured a fifth-place finish, posting a career-best time of 4:28.01, which was just shy of the top-10 in the EMU record books. Finally, junior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. – Chippewa Valley) finished 11th, crossing the finish line in 4:31.45.

Senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) also had a strong showing in the hammer throw. Pendleton finished 17th, posting a throw of 50.12 meters/ 164 feet 5-inches, which was a personal-best and moved her closer towards the No. 5 spot in program history.

Finally, freshmen Kristine Bourg (Shorewood, Ill. – Joliet West) and Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic) both participated in the javelin throw. Bourg finished within the top-10, nabbing seventh with a throw of 36.56 meters/ 119 feet 11-inches, while Salzbrunn took 15th with a mark of 29.47 meters/ 96 feet 8-inches.

The Jesse Owens Invite resumes tomorrow, April 22, in Columbus, Ohio. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the men's pole vault, while running events pick up at noon with the women's 4x100m relay.
