ALLENDALE, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team opened competition at the Al Owens Classic, Friday, April 21, in Allendale, Mich. After one day of competition, the Eagles hold first-place with a total of 17 points.

A pair of Eagles finished within the top-10 of the hammer throw. Redshirt senior Anthony Jones (Sandusky, Ohio – Sandusky) led the way, tallying a third-place finish with a throw of 60.19 meters/ 197 feet 6-inches. Sophomore Zach Harkey (Huron, Ohio – Huron) had an excellent day, shattering his career-best with a launch of 55.48 meters/ 182 feet, which was good for eighth. In fact, that mark puts Harkey at No. 6 in the EMU record books.

Eastern claimed a first-place finish in the javelin throw, as sophomore Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa. – Parkland) nabbed his third top-three finish of the year in the event. This time around, Ziegenfuss finished atop the podium after posting a mark of 63.65 meters/ 208 feet 10-inches, giving him the win by more than a whopping 30 feet.

The majority of the team kicks off the meet tomorrow, April 22. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the women's pole vault, while running events start at 11 a.m.
