Eagles Blanked by Zips in Series Finale

The Eagles were no-hit for the first time since 2014
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its series finale, 9-0, to the University of Akron, Sunday, April 2, at Varsity Field. With the loss, the Eagles fell to 13-17 on the season and 2-4 in Mid-American Conference play and were no-hit for the first time since 2014.
Eastern used three hurlers in the game as junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California), sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles), and senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) entered the circle. Trujillo got the start and was the pitcher of record, while Miranda and Minsker combined to close out the game in relief.
Akron jumped on the Eagles early, plating two runs on a base-clearing double in the opening frame. A double and a walk put two on with one out for UA's Kelly Hysong, who ripped a double off the wall in center to put Akron in front, 2-0. Hysong's two-bagger brought about an early switch in the circle for the Green and White as Miranda entered in relief and promptly got EMU out of the jam.
The Zips pushed their lead to 6-0 in the second, tacking on four more runs behind an RBI single and three-run home run.
The score remained into the fifth, where a solo shot extended Akron's advantage to 7-0. The Zips belted another homer in the seventh to blank the Eagles, 9-0, and take the series 2-1.
Eastern continues a busy stretch Tuesday, April 4, when the Eagles travel down US-23 for a MAC West clash with the Rockets of the University of Toledo. The doubleheader gets underway with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
