Pitching Carries Eagles to Doubleheader Sweep

4/2/2017 6:46:00 PM | Baseball

Junior Brent Mattson tossed a complete game shutout in game one

CHICAGO (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team capped off its weekend in Chicago with a doubleheader sweep of Butler in game one, 4-0, followed by a 5-2 victory in game two over host Chicago State, Sunday, April 2, at Cougar Stadium. The Eagles' (9-18) pitching staff carried the day, only allowing one earned run between the two games.

Game One: Eastern Michigan 4, Butler 0
Game one produced EMU's second complete game shutout in the last five games as junior Brent Mattson (Canton, Mich.-Canton) hurled a complete game two-hitter, striking out six. It was the first complete game of his career and tied his career mark in K's, set in his last start.

Offensively, EMU got all the runs it needed in a wild sixth inning, getting the four on just one hit and three errors. In total, EMU produced four hits and one RBI, a run scoring single from sophomore Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern). EMU also made things happen on the base paths, stealing a season-high five bases, including a steal of home by senior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)).

The game was cruising until the sixth inning, with both teams being held scoreless with just three hits between the two of them. The top of the sixth is where most of the action occurred. It all started with a walk to freshman Drake Peggs (Knightstown, Ind.-Knightstown). Following that, Butler (18-8) tossed a sac bunt over the head of the first baseman to put runners on first and second.

After another sacrifice bunt placed runners on the corners, redshirt senior Jordan Peterson (Gilbert, Ariz.-Highland (Chandler-Gilbert C.C.)) swiped second to put them at second and third. BU then had a pitch out of the zone bounce away, scoring the first run, and after the throw to the plate bounced away as well, Peterson scored to make it 2-0.

The frame was not complete though, as back-to-back walks put runners back on, and they were put on second and third after a steal and wild pitch. Schuemann then delivered his RBI knock, putting the score at 3-0. The final runner came home during the next at bat, when Schuemann broke for second, he drew the throw and Stidham scampered home, making it a four-run game.

The four runs were all Mattson needed the rest of the way, grinding his way through a 1-2-3 sixth and seventh to lead to the eighth. He allowed a walk in the eighth, but got out of it with his sixth K. In the ninth, a lead-off single reached, but one batter later, a 6-4-3 double play ended the game, completing the shutout.

Game Two: Eastern Michigan 5, Chicago State 2
The pitching remained the story in game two as a pair of seniors led the way to victory. Senior Kevin Shul (Albuquerque, N.M.-Albuquerque Academy (College of Southern Nevada)) had the best game of his EMU career, earning his first win in a career-high 5.2 shutout innings of relief, striking out a career-best four batters.

Fellow senior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) got his first save of the season after finishing out the final two innings, not allowing an earned run while striking out two. It was the sixth save of his EMU career.

Offensively, EMU got the job done with just four hits. Schuemann was the lead man again with an RBI triple, the first of his EMU career. He extended his six-game hitting streak, and now has eight hits and seven RBI's in his last six contests.

Chicago State (6-19) struck first with an RBI groundout in the second inning, but EMU had the immediate response with two in the third. Following a walk and hit by pitch, a sac bunt placed runners on second and third. Peterson was there with a sacrifice fly to tie the ball game. The next hitter, senior John Montgomery (Anaheim Hills, Calif.-JSerra), notched EMU's first hit of the game, an RBI single to right to give EMU the 2-1 edge early on.

Shul then went to work in relief, keeping CSU off the board over the next four innings to maintain the 2-1 lead into the seventh. There, EMU tagged on some insurance on a Cougar miscue. With runners on the corners, Peggs broke for second, but CSU tried the pickoff attempt to third, which went wide, scoring the runner from third and making it 3-1 into the stretch. Shul got through the seventh to reach a new career-high in innings and maintain the lead with two to play.

Beaton took over in the eighth and picked up where Shul left off, getting a quick 1-2-3 to take it to the ninth. In the ninth, EMU got some more insurance with some clutch hits. With a runner on third, Schuemann delivered with an RBI triple to make it 4-1. The next batter, sophomore John Rensel Jr. (Tallmadge, Ohio-Tallmadge), entered as a pinch hitter and knocked in one more with an RBI single to put it at 5-1 into the final at bat.

Chicago State loaded the bags in the ninth, and notched a run on a hit by pitch, but Beaton was ultimately able to close the game out and earn his first save of the season.

The Eagles return home this coming week for a solo game against in-state foe Michigan State, Tuesday, April 4. First pitch from Oestrike is set for 6 p.m.
