CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championships, Sunday, March 5, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Eagles were led by redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), who took a runner-up finish at heavyweight to secure an automatic bid into the NCAA Championships.
Overall, EMU placed six of ten wrestlers in the top six of their respective weight classes. The Eagles totaled 64 points to finish in seventh place as a team. Also placing were redshirt junior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)) and redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake), who took fourth at 141 lbs. and 157 lbs., respectively.
Redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) meanwhile took fifth at 174 lbs., while redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) both narrowly missed out on automatic qualification with sixth place finishes.
In the heavyweight title bout, Hutchison re-matched with familiar foe Jake Gunning of Buffalo. The match was a virtual stalemate, with Gunning getting a takedown, and Hutchison two escapes to keep it 2-2 in the third. That's when Hutchison was busted for stalling, and the penalty point proved the difference in the one-point defeat.
Two Eastern wrestlers to pick up wins today were Springer and Carson, as they both won their consolation semifinal matches to get to the third place match. Springer took a tight 2-1 decision over Angel Velasquez of Northern Illinois, while Carson upended No. 5 seeded Cullen Cummings of Ohio in sudden victory. Both dropped the final bout though, settling for fourth.
The other three placers all were downed in their consolation semis, dropping them into a fifth place match. Only one, Davis, was able to come out successful with a decisive 9-3 win over No. 4 seeded Dylan Wiseman of Missouri, capping his incredible EMU career with a fifth-place MAC finish.
Hutchison and any additional at-large wrestlers will now head to St. Louis for the 2017 NCAA Championships. Action from the Scottrade Center will begin Thursday, March 16.
