EMU picked up one win between its three participants
ST. LOUIS (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team concluded the 2016-17 season at the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships, Thursday, March 16 at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. EMU had three participants in this year's field, with all three being eliminated on day one of the event.
Redshirt senior Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) was the lone Eagle to nab a win in the tournament. He finished his storied EMU career with 82 wins, which ranks 10th on the all-time list. Redshirt freshman Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and redshirt junior Gage Hutchison (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan) also participated in their first and second national tournaments, respectively, going two and out.
The day began with the pigtail rounds, in which Barber was a part of, facing off against Kyle Shoop of Lock Haven. The veteran Barber fully controlled the match against the redshirt freshman, getting three takedowns and two nearfall points to lead 8-1. After an escape and 3:37 of riding time, Barber advanced into the championship bracket with a 10-1 major decision.
In the first round of the championship bracket, all three Eagles were taken down by ranked opponents. Gonser was pinned in 3:19 by No. 12 Sean Fausz of NC State. Barber dropped a tight 5-2 decision to No. 16 Jordan Laster of Princeton. Finally, Hutchison drew No. 4 Jacob Kasper of Duke. He only yielded two takedowns, but that was enough in a 5-0 defeat. All three dropped down to the consolation rounds later in the night.
In those consolation rounds, each of the three had competitive matches, but all eventually fell. Gonser drew conference foe Brock Hudkins of Northern Illinois. The 125 pounder was unable to score a point in a 7-0 decision. Barber matched up with Josh Maruca of Arizona State, and was downed 5-1 to end his EMU career. The last Eagle standing, Hutchison, had the tough task of facing his second straight ranked opponent, No. 13 seeded Collin Jensen of Nebraska. Despite holding a tie heading into period three, Jensen was able to score a takedown to escape with a 5-4 decision.
