YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – An early hole was too much to overcome, as the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its series finale versus Kent State University Saturday, March 25, at Varsity Field. The Eagles dug themselves a six-run hole early, and despite a late push, they fell short, 6-3.
The Eagles mustered just four hits off of the Golden Flashes' ace Ronnie Ladines, all of which were base knocks by different players. Sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) drove in all three of EMU's runs with a three-run bomb, her third of the season.
Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) started the game, but only lasted 1.1 innings, surrendering six runs on six hits and two walks, while striking out two. Entering in relief, sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) shined, going 5.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out a pair.
Seeing Trujillo for the third consecutive game, the Golden Flashes jumped on the Whittier, Calif. for two runs on three hits. The two-run frame came courtesy of a two-out double following a pair of base knocks and an intentional walk to KSU's Maddy Grimm. Trujillo stood strong, coming back with an inning-ending strikeout to escape the jam with two on.
Kent State sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of the second, plating four more runs to push its lead to 6-0. The Golden Flashes used three hits and two Eastern Michigan errors to extend their advantage.
In her first full inning of work, Miranda sent KSU down in order to bring the Eagles back to the dish following a quick flash of the leather by freshman Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern).
Sophomore Sam Saporito (Eastvale, Calif.-Eleanor Roosevelt) reached on an error in EMU's half of the third, representing Eastern's first baserunner of the afternoon. Saporito moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, but a fly out to right center ended the Eagles' threat prematurely.
Miranda continued to roll in the fourth, despite issuing an intentional free pass to Grimm to leadoff the inning. The Eagles pulled off an unlikely double play as Miranda fielded the bunt and got the out at first. From there, the Green and White caught KSU's lead runner in a rundown and won the battle as Chretien applied the tag. Miranda completed the 1-2-3 inning with a slow roller back to the circle for the final out of the frame.
Eastern Michigan's bats finally woke up in the bottom of the fourth, beginning with a one-out single by junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace). Sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview) followed suit with a base knock through the left side to put two on with one out for Akles. Akles blasted the 1-1 delivery well over the left field fence, cutting KSU's lead in half with one swing of the bat. The three-run shot by the La Habra, Calif. native made trimmed the Eagles' deficit to three, 6-3, through four turns at bat.
The game became a pitcher's duel from that point on, as Miranda and KSU's Ronnie Ladines allowed just one hit apiece the rest of the way. Despite the valiant relief effort of Miranda, Eastern Michigan could not overcome the early deficit, dropping the finale by a 6-3 tally.
Eastern returns to action with a midweek clash against Notre Dame, Wednesday, March 29, in South Bend, Ind. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m.
