ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A big third inning doomed the Eastern Michigan University softball team in its loss to No. 19 University of Michigan Wednesday afternoon, March 22, at Alumni Field inside the Wilpon Complex. The Eagles (11-12) could not overcome the Wolverines' (19-7-1) five-run third inning, eventually dropping the game, 8-2.
Offensively, Eastern Michigan churned out five hits and struck out a season-high 10 times. Senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) notched her seventh multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3, with a double and a run scored.
Junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) earned the start, going 2.2 innings, allowing six runs on five hits. Sophomore Nicolle Miranda (Wilmington, Calif.-Port of Los Angeles) also got some work in, entering the game in relief. Miranda tossed the final 3.1 frames, allowing two runs on one hit.
An awkward hop on what would have been a bloop single turned into an inside-the-park home run for the Wolverines, putting Michigan in front 1-0 through one inning. Trujillo buckled down from there, retiring the five of the next six she faced to take the game into the third.
Despite inducing a ground ball to open the bottom of the third, an error put a runner on second with nobody out. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Michigan plated two with back-to-back hits to extend its lead to 3-0, before a three-run homer pushed the score to 6-0. After a walk, Miranda entered the game in relief and promptly retired the first batter she faced to send the Eagles to the bat rack.
Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) got things going for EMU in the fourth, ripping a double to the left-center gap. Wagner followed suit, doubling to right center to put two on with nobody out for junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace). Olmos singled to left, bringing Kriegshauser home to put the Eagles on the board. The Green and White added another run with sophomore Amanda Akles (La Habra, Calif.-La Habra) at the dish with runners on the corners. With speed on first, the Eagles attempted to swipe second, allowing Wagner to score from third, cutting the deficit to four, 6-2.
Michigan got two back in its half of the fourth, via a bases-clearing double, to regain a six-run edge with four innings in the books.
Eastern's offense could not get anything going over the final three innings, despite Miranda keeping the Michigan bats at bay, coming away with an 8-2 defeat.
Now, the Eagles set their sights on the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference play, which pits the Green and White against Kent State, March 24-25. First pitch of a twin bill on Friday, March 24, is scheduled for 4 p.m.
