Long Ball Lifts EMU Past Mercer

3/18/2017 8:32:00 PM | Softball

The Eagles hit a season-high three home runs in the game

MACON, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind another stellar outing for junior Trisha Trujillo (Whittier, Calif.-California) and three home runs, the Eastern Michigan University softball team powered past Mercer University, 3-2, on the second day of action at the Mercer Bear Classic, March 18. EMU's (9-11) one-run win over MU (14-18) snapped a five-game losing skid.

Eastern Michigan tallied five hits as a team, leading to a 5-4 edge over Mercer in base knocks. Four Eagles picked up hits for the Green and White, including a 2-for-3 showing from sophomore Olivia Logan (Riverview, Mich.-Riverview). Logan cranked one of EMU's three homers, to finish the day with a run scored and an RBI. Senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way Central) and junior Brandice Olmos (Riverside, Calif.-Grand Terrace) also flexed their muscle, coming through with solo shots of their own.

Trujillo was solid for the Eagles, taming the Bears' offense in just the second complete game of her career. The Whittier, Calif. native went the distance to improve to 6-5 on the season, while striking out three and allowing just one earned run.

Rain in the Macon area delayed first pitch between the Eagles and Bears but did little to disrupt the Green and White as Trujillo pitched her way out early jams. Following a 1-2-3 frame for EMU in the opening frame, Trujillo worked around back-to-back no-out singles to keep the game scoreless through one.

A walk and a hit by pitch gave Eastern its first two baserunners of the game, but the Eagle offense could not come through, stranding two.

Mercer crossed the plate first, taking advantage of a leadoff walk in the second. After single put two on with nobody out, the Bears grabbed an extra base on a throwing error to take a 1-0 lead. Trujillo bounced back though, not allowing the miscue to get the best of her, and rang up the next batter she faced before inducing an inning-ending fly out.

Kriegshauser leveled the score at one with a one-out home run to left center. The round-tripper was her team-leading third of the season, and the 23rd of her career.

Returning to the circle, Trujillo sent Mercer down in order in the bottom half of the third to send EMU back to the bat rack.

This time, Logan launched her first homer of the season to leadoff the inning, putting Eastern in front, 2-1. Mercer responded in its half of the inning on an RBI single, leaving the score tied at two through four.

The Bears made a pitching change in the fifth as the Eagles turned things over to the top of the lineup. The move looked to have stalled the EMU offense as Kriegshauser and senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) flew out, but Olmos dug into the batter's box and blasted her first dinger of the season to left center. Olmos' third homer of her career allowed Eastern to regain the lead, 3-2.

From there, Trujillo retired Mercer's final nine batters of the game to wrap up a 3-2 win for the Green and White.

Due to the delays, Eastern Michigan's rematch against Belmont, originally scheduled for tonight, March 18, has been moved to tomorrow, March 19. The Eagles will close out play at the Mercer Bear Classic with a 9:30 a.m. first pitch against Savannah State University and an 11:45 a.m. meeting with Belmont.
