Eagles Cruise to 6-1 Victory Over Chicago State

EMU took all but one match in the win
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University's tennis team broke a three-match losing streak Saturday, March 11, when it defeated Chicago State University in a non-conference tilt at the Chippewa Racquet Club. For the Eagles (4-9), they quickly took the doubles point before cruising to five two-set wins in singles action over the Cougars (4-11).
In doubles action, the No. 1 duo of sophomore Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) and junior Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) dispatched of the Chicago State's top squad of Hanema Pangestu and Leshia Gadacz, 6-1, before redshirt junior Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and junior Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) knocked off Carynne Lloyd and Lorea Gamboa by the same score in the No. 2 doubles match. Finally, juniors Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Alejandra Barcelo Almoyna (Alicante, Spain-IES Figueras Racheco) were leading 4-3 before their match went unfinished.
Moving on to singles play, Mayerova took down Mariya Kostyuk, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Gogvadze defeated Gamboa, 6-2, 6-0, in the No. 2 position. Martinovska was also able to sweep Gadacz, 6-1, 6-1, in the third spot. Veleva and Barcelo Almoyna each came away with two set wins at No. 5 and 6, respectively.
The Green and White get back to the court Friday, March 17, when it travels to Southfield, Mich. to square off with the University of Detroit Mercy at 8 p.m.
