EMU Takes Second Straight with 6-1 Victory Over Detroit Mercy

After cruising to the doubles point, EMU won all but one singles contest
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University tennis team closed out non-conference play with a big 6-1 win over the University of Detroit Mercy Friday night, March 17, at the Franklin Athletic Club in Southfield. The Eagles (5-9) cruised to the doubles point before winning five singles contests from the Titans (3-8), three of which went to three sets.
The Czech duo of Andrea Martinovska (Plzn, Czech Republic-Sport and Management School) and Marie Mayerova (Krmelin, Czech Republic) took the No. 1 doubles match, 6-2, before Ani Gogvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia-Khikani) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) defeated Detroit Mercy's Pauline Van Herck and Anna Davydova by an identical score to secure the doubles point and a 1-0 lead for the Eagles.
Eastern and UDM saw three of the singles matches go to third sets. Mayerova defeated Davydova, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, while Martinovska dispatched of Iris Thioux, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot. Gogvadze and Anna Veleva (Sofia, Bulgaria) each added two set wins at No. 2 and No. 5 repsectively, while Ribero defeated Nynke Van Der Goot, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0 (7), in the No. 4 singles match.
"This was a solid win today," remarked Head Coach Ryan Ray. "We will have a lot of battles in the MAC, so we needed a match like this to prepare us. Winning all three, three set, matches is a big step forward for us. We just need to keep the momentum going."
The Eagles move into Mid-American Conference play Friday, March 24, when they host Bowling Green State University. The match is slated for 1 p.m. and is set to take place at the Wasik Tennis Complex. Should weather play an issue, the match will be moved inside to the Chippewa Racquet Club.
