MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) –
Walks and errors proved costly as the Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped its final two games of opening weekend. The Eagles (3-3) squandered an early lead against Quinnipiac University, falling 4-3, in their first game of the day. In its last game of the weekend, a comeback push fell short, as EMU dropped the game, 4-1.

Game #1: Eastern Michigan 3, Quinnipiac 4
The Bobcats held a 10-7 edge in hits, with seven different Eagles recording a knock.

Quinnipiac struck first, plating one in the first on a sacrifice fly, before EMU evened things up in the bottom half of the frame. After senior Michelle Kriegshauser (New Lenox, Ill.-Lincoln Way North) successfully swiped third, freshman Danielle Rico (Moreno Valley, Calif.-Grand Terrace) laced a double to the left field fence to level the score at one.

EMU tacked on another run in the second, following a double by junior Haley Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan). Advancing to third on a ground out, Hostetler came across the plate on an infield single by sophomore Lucy Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif.-Stockdale). Lopez's RBI single put EMU in front, 2-1, its first lead of the day.

Eastern Michigan ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth, as Quinnipiac put runners on the corners with one out and attempted the double steal. Receiving the pitch, senior Taylor Wagner (Marshalltown, Iowa-Marshalltown) hopped up and fired down to second, where freshman shortstop Ariana Chretien (Commerce, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) forced the runner back. With the trail runner heading back towards first, QU's lead runner took off from third, at which point Chreitien fired home and Wagner put down the tag for out number two. Senior Abbie Minsker (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) completed the Eagles' escape from the jam, stunning the batter at the plate with a strikeout.

The Eagles found themselves in another jam one inning later. With the bases loaded, a hard ground ball to the right side took a weird hop and made its way to right field. With one run already across, QU sent another runner home, but Kriegshauser tossed the Bobcat out at the plate. The 2-2 tie was short lived however, as an error put Quinnipiac in front, 3-2.

The Bobcats never looked back, adding a run on an RBI single in the sixth, to push their advantage two, 4-2.

Hostetler led the Eagles half of the sixth off with a walk and eventually came around to score on an error, to pull the Green and White within one.

After a scoreless top of the seventh, EMU went to bat trailing, 4-3. Wagner gave the Eagles life, reaching on a walk, but two pop outs and a lineout ended the game.

Game #2: Eastern Michigan 1, North Dakota 4
In its second game of the day, walks plagued Eastern Michigan. A pair of bases loaded walks in the first inning gave North Dakota the head start, 2-0.

Over the next five innings, EMU's offense could not find a rhythm at the plate. The Eagles finally broke through in the sixth inning, plating one run on a hit by pitch, but the Green and White left three runners on to end the frame.

A two-run home run extended UND's lead to 4-1 as EMU went to the plate for its final at bats. In the bottom of the seventh, the Eagles went down in order to wrap up the game.

The Green and White return to action Wednesday, Feb. 22, in Tampa, Fla., where the Eagles will tangle with the University of South Florida. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
