No. 1 Eastern Michigan will play No. 6 Ohio in the fifth-place match
Live Scoring.
DADE City, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team opened its spring season on Monday, Feb. 13, by posting an 0-1-1 record at the Sixth Annual Earl Yestingsmeier Match Play on the par 72, 7,153 yard Lake Jovita Golf Course. The No. 1 seed Eagles fell in the opening round to No. 8 seed Miami, 4-2, before rebounding to edge No. 5 seed Toledo on tiebreakers.
Schools are competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches is worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches wins.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consists of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.
The top-seeded Eagles finished in 2015 and 2016 and second at the 2012 and 2014 events. In the six years of the event, Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's crew has posted an 12-4 record in match play.
In the opening round, sophomore Beau Breault (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) took a 4-and-3 decision over Callahan Elzey, while senior Philippe Weppernig (Lucerne, Switzerland-Kantonsschule Alpenquai Luzern-Owens C.C.) earned a 2-and-1 victory over JD Fletcher. The
In other first round action, No. 4 Seton Hall defeated No. 5 Toledo, 5-1, No. 3 Ball State bested No. 6 Ohio, 4-2, and No. 2 Notre Dame advanced past No. 7 DePaul, 4-2.
In the afternoon versus Toledo, the duo of senior Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) (4&2) and Nic Ross (Dundas, Ontario, Canada-Highland Secondary) (5&3) claimed Eastern's victories. The Rockets responded with two victories of their own to knot the match at 2-2. Breault halved with Spencer Shoemaker, while Joey Kremer (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Senator O'Connor) was all-square with Joe Bryce. The match was ultimately decided based upon EMU's combined two-hole lead to advance on tiebreakers.
The Eagles will now play No. 6 seed Ohio University for fifth place tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring for Tuesday's rounds are available at Golfstat.com.
