EMU won one bout on the night
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team was overpowered by No. 15 Central Michigan University in a 29-3 setback Friday night, Feb. 10, inside Bowen Field House.
EMU (6-7, 2-6 MAC) won just one bout on the day in a 7-6 decision at 165 lbs. from redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson). CMU's (8-2, 5-2 MAC) nine victories included just two bonus point wins. Four of the victories were tight bouts, with two decided by one point, and two others decided in overtime.
The dual began at heavyweight, which was a slugfest until the end, as CMU edged out the win in the second tiebreaker round to jump ahead 3-0.
CMU won four of the next five bouts with nationally ranked wrestlers, which included a sudden victory win for No. 8 Colin Heffernan over redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake). The 157 pounder had the dual on the ropes, 1-1, going into sudden victory, but Heffernan was able to secure the takedown in overtime for the 3-1 win.
Eastern's lone win came at 165 lbs., as the veteran Marry grinded out a 7-6 decision. The Hudson, Mich. product got a takedown and racked up riding time in the first two periods. It was tied 4-4 going into the third, and both traded a takedown and reversal in the final stanza, but Marry's riding time sealed the deal, 7-6. The win moved Marry to 7-4 in duals on the season.
From there, EMU had another close match at 197 lbs., as redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) nabbed a couple takedowns on No. 17 Austin Severn, but the ranked grappler ultimately got a takedown late in the third to get a 6-5 decision.
EMU has one final dual left, as they take on the Michigan State Spartans Sunday, Feb. 12 for Senior Day. The dual from the Convocation Center is set for 2 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN3.
