EMU led by two points heading into the final weight class before dropping the final match.
EMU (6-8, 2-6 MAC) and MSU (5-10, 1-7 B1G) both won five bouts each, with the difference in team score being a technical fall for the Spartans. Eastern notched a major decision for its only bonus point victory.
The dual began at 174 lbs, where redshirt senior Jacob Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-St. Edward) got things started with a 3-0 decision. He was down 2-0 early, but got a reversal and back points for a 6-2 lead after one. Davis then held on in the next two periods for a 7-4 decision victory.
MSU returned the favor at 184 lbs. with a tight 3-1 decision. The match came down to the final period, where a late takedown sealed the deal, and tied the dual at three.
Eastern notched a major decision at 197 lbs. when redshirt sophomore Derek Hillman (Woodhaven, Mich.-Woodhaven) racked up 11 points with three takedowns and a nearfall for his second major decision of the season. The bonus point win put the Eagles up 7-3 going into heavyweight.
The heavyweight bout was another tight match, with this one going to sudden victory. EMU came out on the wrong end of a scramble near the end of the sudden victory period, and dropped the match by a 5-3 score to tighten the match back to 7-6.
EMU bounced back at 125 lbs. when redshirt freshman No. 18 Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) took a 4-2 decision. The nationally ranked grappler got a first period takedown, but quickly got reversed to tie it. He went on to get an escape, and with riding time took the bout. It was his 15th win of the season, and seventh in duals.
The two teams continued to trade matches, as MSU took the 133 lbs. bout with a 6-3 decision, putting the team score back to a one-point battle, 10-9. The Spartans took their first lead of the day with a technical fall at 141 lbs., to spring ahead, 14-10, with three matches to go.
The Eagles kept the match tight, with a thrilling 3-1 decision for redshirt senior No. 28 Nick Barber (Cleveland, Ohio-St. Edward) at 149 lbs. The veteran was in a 1-1 deadlock late in the third period, but notched the decisive takedown right before the buzzer to get the win. It was his 15th victory of the season, and 80th for his career.
The lead changed again at 157 lbs. when redshirt freshman Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake) notched an 8-5 decision over 20-win Austin Thompson of MSU. Carson found himself down 4-1 early, but got two reversals to storm back, 5-4. From there, he got an escape later, along with a stall call and riding time to get the huge victory.
It all came down to the 165 lbs. match to decide the dual, as redshirt senior Devan Marry (Hudson, Mich.-Hudson) was tasked with trying to take down No. 25 Drew Hughes to get the win. With things scoreless in the third, Hughes got a turn for a nearfall, and took the match with riding time to get the win for MSU, 17-16.
The Eagles have completed dual season, and will now prepare for the MAC Championships this coming March. Action from Cedar Falls, Iowa will run Saturday and Sunday, March 4-5.
