FULL RESULTS
HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up competition at day one of the 55th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Friday evening, Dec. 29, at Sears Centre Arena. Of EMU's nine grapplers to hit the mats, three advanced to day two of the prestigious tournament.
Redshirt senior Kyle Springer (New Boston, Mich.-Davenport Assumption (Indiana)), redshirt sophomore Zac Carson (Akron, Ohio-Lake), and redshirt junior Kayne MacCallum (Green Oaks, Ill.-Libertyville) are all still alive in their respective weight classes, and will look to place tomorrow against some of the top competition in the country. All told, EMU won 15 bouts on the day, and sits in 20th-place out of 38 teams with 18 team points.
MacCallum was the lone Eagle to get into the quarterfinals, as he won his first two matches of the day in the championship rounds at 184 lbs. The Illinois native knocked off No. 21 nationally ranked Kordell Norfleet of Arizona State in the first round, then followed that up with a 5-3 decision to get to the quarters. There, he met No. 10 nationally ranked Emery Parker of Illinois. MacCallum held tough, but ultimately conceded the 8-5 defeat to drop into the consolation round, where he will continue tomorrow.
Carson was the other EMU wrestler to win a championship round match, notching a win in his first bout at 165 lbs. by 13-6 decision. He dropped his round two matchup to No. 5 nationally ranked Richie Lewis of Rutgers, but bounced back with two wins in the consolation rounds to get to day two.
Springer had the most wins of any Eagle in day one, notching four wins, all coming in the consolation bracket at 149 lbs. The veteran dropped a tough match in round one, losing in sudden victory. Springer then went on a tear, winning his next four matches, all by major decision. His third victory came over returning NCAA qualifier and No. 18 nationally ranked Alfred Bannister of Maryland.
Elsewhere, Eastern had three other athletes notch wins, including redshirt freshman Andrew McNally (Uniontown, Ohio-Lake) who had three on the day at 174 lbs., including two by pin. He now leads EMU with six falls on the season. The other wins came from redshirt sophomores Noah Gonser (Grand Blanc, Mich.-Grand Blanc) and Sa'Derian Perry (Lakeland, Fla.-Lake Gibson) at 133 and 141 lbs., respectively. Perry had two, while Gonser had one, all by decision.
Action at the Sears Centre Arena resumes tomorrow at 1 p.m. with the continuation of the consolation rounds.
