Eight Eastern Michigan Football Players Named All-MAC

For the second consecutive season, the Eagles had eight players honored

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — For the second consecutive year, the Eastern Michigan University football team saw eight of its student-athletes named to All-Mid-American Conference Teams, the league office announced Wednesday, Nov. 29. The eight selections are tied for third-most in program history, with the 1986, 1988, 1996, and 2016 teams also posting the same amount of honorees.

Senior wide receiver Sergio Bailey II (San Diego, Calif.-Olympian-Grossmont College) became the first EMU offensive player since Eric Deslauriers in 2006 to earn a first team selection. The sophomore tandem of defensive lineman Maxx Crosby (Colleyville, Texas-Colleyville Heritage) and defensive back Brody Hoying (Coldwater, Ohio-Coldwater) also became the first EMU defensive pair since 2007 to pick up first team accolades. Junior offensive lineman Jimmy Leatiota (San Jose, Calif.-Wilcox-College of San Mateo) and junior defensive lineman Jeremiah Harris (Lambertville, Mich.-Bedford Senior) were each named to the second team. In addition, senior quarterback Brogan Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Toledo St. John's Jesuit), senior linebacker Jason Beck (Indianapolis, Ind.-Arsenal Technical), and sophomore defensive back Vince Calhoun (Middletown, Ohio-Middletown) all garnered All-MAC Third Team honors.

Bailey and Harris were each tabbed for the second time, while every other player earned All-MAC honors for the first time in their careers.

"All individual honors are only possible with the rest of the team," said Head Coach Chris Creighton. "Our guys know that, so we celebrate these outstanding accomplishments together as a team. We had some remarkable performances this year and I'm glad that some of our guys are being recognized."

Moving up after being named to the 2016 All-MAC Third Team, Bailey had one of the best two-year runs in program history after transferring from Grossmont College. In 25 career games, Bailey caught at least one pass in every game to finish with 114 receptions for 1,746 yards and 16 touchdowns. Those numbers rank ninth, sixth, and third on the all-time EMU list, respectively. The San Diego, Calif. native was EMU's top receiving threat in 2017, posting 54 catches for 878 yards and nine scores. The nine TDs were the third-most in an EMU single-season while the 54 grabs ranked eighth-best. Nationally, Bailey ranked 19th in receiving touchdowns, 40th in receiving yards, and 79th in receptions per game.

A nominee for the Hendricks Award, Crosby posted 11 sacks on the year to tie the EMU single-season record set by Avery Brown in 1996. For the season, Crosby ranked fourth in the conference and sixth in the country in sacks, while coming in 14th nationally in tackles for loss. Overall, the Colleyville, Texas product finished with 57 tackles (31 solo, 26 assist) to go along with 16.5 tackles for a loss of 105 yards. He also forced four fumbles, while returning one for a score at Central Michigan University, Nov. 8. Crosby became the first EMU player in the modern statistical era (since 1998) to rack up three sacks in back-to-back games, as he in the process tied the EMU single-game record with a trio of sacks at CMU and Miami University, Nov. 15. In addition, his 12.5 career quarterback-take-downs is already fifth-most at EMU since 1998.

Hoying had a knack for taking the football away from the opposition in 2017, as the first-year starter led the country in fumble recoveries with four. He also ranked sixth in the FBS with four forced fumbles and hauled in a pair of interceptions for EMU. Overall, he ranked 13th in the MAC with 78 tackles (44 solo, 34 assisted) to go along with four stops for a loss. The Coldwater, Ohio product returned a pick-six in the season opener against UNC Charlotte, Sept 1, and followed it up with a 71-yard INT return against Rutgers University, Sept. 9, to help the Eagles to their first-ever win over a "Power 5" opponent. In total, Hoying's 106 interception return yards rank seventh-most in an EMU single-season. For his efforts, he was named the league's Player of the Week on Sept. 25 and the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week on Sept. 27.

Leatiota has been a rock on the EMU offensive line since his arriving on campus. A candidate for the Outland Trophy, he helped anchor at right guard an overhauled offensive line that ranked second in the MAC and 26th nationally in the fewest sacks given up in 2017. EMU's offense ranked third in the MAC in passing offense at 257.3 yards per game through the air. The line also gelled down the stretch for the rushing attack, as EMU racked up 815 yards on the ground and four 100-yard rushers during the final four games.

Moving up after being named to the 2016 All-MAC Third Team, Harris teamed up with Crosby to wreak havoc on opposing offenses this season. Ranked seventh in the MAC and 57th in the FBS with 6.0 sacks, the Lambertville, Mich. native finished with 45 tackles (25 solo, 20 assisted). He also ranked eighth in the league with 12.5 stops for a loss of 61 yards. The junior had the game-sealing sack on the final play of the game against Rutgers University, Sept. 9, to clinch the first victory over a 'Power 5' program in school history. For his efforts, he was named the league's Player of the Week on Sept. 11 and Oct. 2 as well as the MAC's Scholar Athlete of the Week on Sept. 13. Overall, Harris ranks eighth in EMU history with his 11 sacks.

With the combined 17 sacks between the pair, Crosby with 11 and Harris with six, they are behind only two other pairs for the most amount of sacks between two players in the country behind players from TCU (19) and Northern Illinois (18).

Roback will go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play for Eastern Michigan, as the fifth-year senior owns program records with 57 touchdown passes and 8,876 yards of total offense. He also ranks second all-time with 745 completions and 8,653 yards passing. To go along with the all-time school records, Roback also had one of the best careers of any active FBS quarterback. His passing yards were 12th among active QBs, while his yards of total offense ranked 13th.

In 2017, the Maumee, Ohio product ranked 27th nationally in passing yardage (2,890), 34th in passing touchdowns (19), and 36th in passing yards per game (240.8). Roback set the standard for career touchdown passes against CMU, Nov. 8, and career total offense against Miami, Nov. 15. Due to an injury suffered on Senior Day, he finished the year just 110 yards shy of joining Charlie Batch as the only quarterbacks in program history to pass for more than 3,000 yards in a season.

An iron man for EMU, Beck tied the program record for games played (49) and games started (47). In his time on defense, he racked up the seventh-most tackles in EMU history with 353 stops, including 179 solo tackles and 10.5 tackles for loss. The Indianapolis, Ind. native led the Eagles in tackles in 2017 with 83 stops (40 solo, 43 assisted). Overall, Beck ranked 19th in the MAC in tackles per game (6.7) while posting eight games with seven-or-more stops.

Calhoun led a talented group of underclassmen in EMU's secondary that allowed the 25th fewest yards passing in the FBS ranks. He finished the year with 78 tackles (48 solo, 30 assisted) to go along with a trio of pass breakups. The Middletown, Ohio product ranked 13th in the MAC with 7.1 tackles per game.

One of the best football teams in recent Eastern Michigan history and arguably one of the best in the Mid-American Conference, the Eagles experienced plenty of moments of celebration as well as heartbreak in 2017. Despite finishing with a 5-7 record, the 12 wins over the last two seasons is EMU's best two-year stretch since winning 13 games from 1988-89.

The margin for error was razor thin for the Eagles this year as nine of EMU's 12 games were decided by seven points or less, including six of EMU's seven losses coming down to one possession, and a school-record three in overtime. All told, EMU's seven losses were by a combined 35 points.

After setting program records on the offensive side of the ball last season, it was the defense's time to shine in 2017, as they had one of the most successful defensive campaigns in program history. The 23.3 points allowed per game was the 12th best mark in school history in the modern era (since 1976), and the best since 1993. Furthermore, the 364.4 yards of total offense allowed was the second-best mark since 1998 and best since 2011.

On the national scale, the Eagles ranked in the top-50 nationally in 10 major defensive categories, including second in fourth down defense, 17th in defensive touchdowns, 36th in team sacks, 42nd in points per game allowed, and 43rd in total defense.

Furthermore, Defensive Coordinator Neal Neathery's crew proved to be very stingy in the fourth quarter, allowing just 3.8 points per game over the course of the final 15 minutes. Even better at home, the Eagles did not give up a fourth quarter point inside "The Factory". Nationally, EMU ranked fourth in the fewest points given up in the fourth. The defense also posted three returns for touchdowns, the most by an EMU squad since 1994.

EMU will hold its 55th Annual football banquet on Dec. 10 before turning its attention to the 2018 campaign with the early signing period beginning Dec. 20.

Eastern Michigan opens the new year Friday, Aug. 31, against Monmouth University inside "The Factory" at Rynearson Stadium. Other non-conference match ups include trips to Purdue University, Sept. 8, San Diego State University, Sept. 22, and a home game against Army West Point, Oct. 27.
