Davis' 108th Minute Strike Leads EMU Soccer Past Bowling Green 2-1 in Double OT

10/5/2017 7:11:00 PM | Soccer

Junior Peyton Davis recorded a career-high three points

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A 108th-minute goal off the foot of junior Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) completed the Eastern Michigan University soccer team's comeback win over Bowling Green State University Thursday, Oct. 5, at Scicluna Field. The Eagles (5-8-1, 2-3-0 MAC) fell behind in the 23rd minute, but a career-high three-point effort from Davis led EMU to a 2-1 win in double overtime.

Despite being outshot by the Falcons (7-5-0, 2-3-0 MAC), 17-10, the Eagles edged out their opponents in shots on goal, 6-5. EMU also registered five corner kicks compared to BGSU's three.

Bowling Green won the possession battle early on, eventually breaking through with a goal in the 23rd minute. Despite the aggressive start by the Falcons, EMU responded immediately.

Six key substitutions sparked the Eagles attack, as EMU began to create solid chances on goal. Junior Mia Colavito (Mississauga, Ontario-Loyola Catholic Central) had a pair of chances on the doorstep, Davis sent a header wide, and freshman Parys Kerr (Whitby, Ontario-Pickering) bent a shot wide of the near post, leaving the game 1-nil in favor of BGSU at halftime.

A close call in the first minute of the second half nearly doubled Bowling Green's lead, but an outstanding tackle by sophomore Aubrey Martin (Toronto, Ontario-Father John Redmond) on the endline kept the 1-0 score intact.

Countering, redshirt junior Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) flicked on a clear to Davis on the near sideline. Racing down to beat her mark, Davis cut back and delivered a perfect cross to the far post where freshman Kennady Kuhlman (Howell, Mich.-Hartland) slotted home the equalizer in the 67th minute. The goal was the first of Kuhlman's career, while the assist was the first of the season for Davis.

Neither team could take advantage of opportunities down the stretch, leaving the game tied at one through 90 minutes of action.

After a relatively quiet first OT period, the teams went to double overtime. Williams made a clutch save early and EMU's offense rallied from there, firing off four shots within one minute. First, senior Chanel Vani (Brampton, Ontario-Cardinal Leger) pinged a shot off the crossbar. Then, freshman Madeline Olson (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) had a shot deflected out for a corner. Keeping the pressure on, freshman Alia Frederick (Linden, Mich.-Linden) ripped a shot on goal that was too much for the BGSU keeper to handle. Crashing goal on the shot, Davis collected the rebound and beat the Falcon netminder nearside for the game-winning goal in the 109th minute to secure the thrilling 2-1 victory.

The Green and White get a three-game road trip rolling Sunday, Oct. 8, in the Glass City as EMU travels to Scott Park to take on the University of Toledo. Kickoff between the Eagles and Rockets is scheduled for 1 p.m.
