Externs will gain practical experience in the areas of sports law
DETROIT, Mich. – Starting in Winter 2018, University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will offer its students a sports law externship with Eastern Michigan University's NCAA Compliance Office. Externs will gain practical experience in the areas of sports law and intercollegiate athletic administration.
EMU operates a NCAA Division I athletics program with 21 intercollegiate sports. The legal externs will assist licensed attorneys as they research and interpret NCAA regulations, investigate rule violations, present educational materials to coaches, and monitor the day-to-day operations of the Athletics Department.
"We are thrilled to partner with Eastern Michigan University and its Athletics Department to offer this sports law externship to our students," said Anne Yantus, Clinical Director at Detroit Mercy Law. "This is a win-win relationship for both schools because EMU does not have a law school and Detroit Mercy Law students can benefit from the strong Division I athletics programs offered by EMU."
Externs will work on issues concerning ethical conduct, amateurism certification, recruiting, student athlete academic and athletic eligibility, athletic scholarship awards, sport playing and practice seasons, risk management, and the NCAA legislative process.
"Experiential learning, especially in a legal education, is vital for students to achieve their professional objectives," said Matthew Jakobsze, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance at Eastern Michigan University Department of Athletics. "We are proud to offer an avenue for Detroit Mercy Law students to apply their legal education to the ethical standards of higher education and athletic administration. This externship will provide students with advancement and growth, and build meaningful professional development opportunities in the intercollegiate athletics community."
