Eight Different Eagles Contribute to Win Over Denison

GRANVILLE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - In a balance effort, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team rolled past Denison University, Saturday, Oct. 21. The Eagles were paced by junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) who added three first-place finishes to the final score of 184.5-115.5.
After Eastern grabbed two of the top-three spots in the 200 medley relay, Swartz's dominating performance in the 1000 freestyle put the Eagles on top. Swartz, clocking in at 10:21.89, took the lead from the first 25 and never looked back, touching in 19 seconds before the next swimmer.
In the 200 free, the Eagles earned their first sweep of the day. Swartz led the charge, clocking in at 1:54.59, while sophomore Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline) and junior Marissa Marion (Rockford, Mich.-Rockford) followed close behind at 1:54.71 and 1:55.63, respectively.
Sophomores Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) and Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) kept the momentum going with a one-two punch in the 100 backstroke. Gavigan touched in first at 56.42 while Young was just behind at 56.84.
Following a third-place finish in the 100 breaststroke by freshman Carlee Jones (Edgewood, Ky.-Notre Dame Academy), junior Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta) notched her first top-finish of the season in the 200 butterfly, finishing at 1:07.36.
Moving on to the 50 free, junior Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.) proved her sprinting talent, taking first place in a quick 23.94 while senior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) snagged third-place at 24.42.
Armstrong won her first event as an Eagle in the 100 free while Johnston and Walker took third and fourth, touching in at 53.02 and 53.43, respectively.
Gavigan swept the back events, including a dominating performance in the 200 back with a time of 2:02.50. Young earned four more points for the Eagles after her time of 2:05.46 was good for second-place.
After a third-place finish in the 200 breast by Jones, Swartz continued her excellent day at Denison in the 500 free. Similar to the 1000, she took the lead from the block and never looked back, finishing seven seconds ahead of second-place senior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth).
Junior Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin) had her first top-finish of the meet, taking the 100 fly at 57.48 before sophomore Kylie Sutherlin (Fishers, Ind.) and Jones led the 1-2 punch in the 200 individual medley.
In the final event of the afternoon, the Eagles took first and third in the 400 free relay to secure the Eastern victory, 184.5-115.5.
Meanwhile, on the springboard, senior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) had a solid day earning an event win on the 1-meter with a score of 259.88.
Sophomore Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) took home third-place on both the 1- and 3-meter with a score of 247.28 and 216.75, respectively.
The Eagles return to action next week when they return to Ohio to take on Bowling Green State University, Oct. 28. Action is slated to being a 1 p.m.
