BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -
Behind a balanced performance, the Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team secured its 10th consecutive Mid-American Conference dual win with a victory against Bowling Green State University Saturday, Oct. 28. The Eagles won their MAC opener, 207-93, behind a strong overall performance that included wins in 13-of-16 events.

Sophomore Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South) and juniors Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), and Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.) put the Eagles in front from the get-go, claiming the top spot in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.52.

The Green and White then posted a pair of top-three finishes in the 1000 freestyle, paced by junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), who touched in first at 10:13.56. Senior Sarah Dombkowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth) racked up a second-place finish touching in at 10:23.27 to complete the 1-2 punch.

After a second-place finish in the 200 free by sophomore Amelia Armstrong-Grant (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Saline), Eastern used a pair of first-place finishes in back-to-back events to distance itself from Bowling Green. Young returned to the pool for the 100 backstroke and claimed the top-spot with a time of 56.60. Then, in the 100 breaststroke, Duncan touched in well ahead of the field at 1:02.95.

Moving on to the 200 butterfly, EMU earned its first sweep of the day behind the efforts of juniors Emilie Desnoyers (St. Albert, Alberta) and Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.-Williamsville), and sophomore Kylie Sutherlin (Fishers, Ind.). Desnoyers led the sweep with a mark of 2:05.54, while Winnert and Sutherlin followed behind with times of 2:08.30 and 2:08.91, respectively.

Following a 1-2 punch in the 50 free by Johnston and junior Dora Vrcic (Dubrovacka, Split, Croatia), Armstrong extended EMU's lead in the 100 free, headlining another Eastern sweep. After Armstrong nabbed first at 52.97, Johnston and freshman Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) rounded out the top-three. Johnston posted a time of 53.49 to take second, while Staffeldt finished right on her heels to claim third.

After a first-place finished in the 200 back by sophomore Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y. / Ward Melville), Duncan continued to show her dominance in the 200 breast, clocking in four seconds before the second-place finisher at 2:19.45. Freshman Carlee Jones (Edgewood, Ky.-Notre Dame Academy) rounded out the top-three finishers for the Eagles in the event, earning third.

Swartz posted her fifth individual win of the season in the 500 free, turning in a time of 5:01.40. Dombkowski touched in just behind Swartz, taking second with a time of 5:03.04.

In the 100 fly, the Eagles used a pair of top-three finishes to continue expanding on its lead from Bowling Green. Liberman clocked in with a time of 56.07 to take first, while Vrcic touched in with a time of 57.77 to finish third.

Young paced the Green and White in the 200 individual medley, propelling the Eagles to another sweep of the top two spots. Leading the way, Young clocked in with a time of 2:09.75, while freshman Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.- Forest Hills Central) followed close at 2:09.89.

On the springboard, senior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) led the Eagles with a pair of second-place finishes on the 1- and 3-meter dives with scores of 229.42 and  279.97, respectively. In her first meet this season, senior Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) finished third in the 1-meter with a score of 228.30.

Eastern Michigan closed out the afternoon with a first-place finish in the 400 free relay behind the team of Johnston, Staffeldt, Armstrong, and Vrcic. The top finish capped a 207-93 win for the Green and White.

The Eagles aim to extend their MAC dual win streak when they return to the pool next weekend, to take on the Zips of Akron, in Jones Natatorium. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
