YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team is back in action this weekend to take on Denison University, Saturday, Oct. 21.
Eastern enters the weekend after it was handed a 174-124 setback by the University of Kentucky, Oct. 14, where eight Eagles made their debut. Competing in four events, junior Stephanie Johnston (Holland Mich.) tied a Wildcat for a meet-high 12 points. In the 50 freestyle, Johnston clocked in first with a time of 23.79 before nabbing third in the 100 free at 52.47. She was a critical member of both the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay teams, leading the Eagles to a pair of victories.
In her first meet as an Eagle, freshman Carlee Jones (Edgewood, Ky.-Notre Dame Academy) had an outstanding showing, earning 11 points in four events. Jones recorded her first career win in the 400 individual medley, clocking in at 4:28.04, wile also placing fourth in the 200 breaststroke.
The Green and White, who are currently 9-1 in its series against the NCAA Division III Champion Denison, looks to replicate last years meet. Opening the 2016-17 season with a dominating 196-99 win over the Big Red, the Eagles won every event but one and had sweeps in four events. In a balanced effort, nine different Eagles earned a first-place finish. Then-sophomore Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) led the way sweeping the breast events while then-junior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) dominated the springboard with the top scores for the 1- and 3-meter dives. In a 1-2 punch, then-sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) showed her long-distance dominance in the 1000 free, touching in almost four seconds before then-junior Sarah Dombowski (Canton, Mich.-Plymouth), and 18 seconds before a Denison competitor.
The Eagles' dual against the Big Red is scheduled to get underway at 1 p.m. in the Trumball Aquatics Center. Live results will be available for the meet here while a live stream can be found here.
