EMU collected three top-three finishes on the day
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Racing through high winds and rain, the Eastern Michigan University rowing team opened the 2017-18 season at the Head of the Grand Sunday, Oct. 15, in East Lansing. The meet, which took place on Grand River, pitted the Eagles against Michigan State University, Grand Valley State University, Michigan Tech, and Northern Michigan, and saw the Green and White claim three top-three finishes.
"Despite some rough conditions we had a lot of good racing today," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "The Varsity did a good job making adjustments between the Varsity 4's and 2- to race in the 8 much better in the afternoon. We still have a lot of work to do to cut the gap between a top-25 program and ourselves, but days like today help us get back to work and get the drive to really go fast. The Novice 8's did very well, racing their first time, let alone in high winds and rain. They have some time to really focus on their event at the Head of the Hooch and trying to get the team's first win there."
Eastern Michigan's top finish came in the form of a win in the 2- race, where juniors Addison Oblanas (Seattle, Wash.-Seattle Academy) and Kelli Sharples (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) led the field with a time of 13:23.0. The duo won the race by more than 15 seconds, outlasting a trio of boats from GVSU.
In the Novice 8+, the Green and White recorded second and fourth-place finishes. The 'A' boat clocked in with a time of 12:54.4 to finish runner-up, while the 'B' boat's time of 13:46.2 was good for fourth.
The Eagles turned in another solid performance in the last race of the day, ultimately coming away with a third-place finish. The Green and White finished with a time of 11:15.1, holding off boats from Michigan State and Grand Valley for its third top-three finish of the day.
Eastern Michigan returns to action Saturday, Oct. 21, in Boston. There, the Eagles will compete in the historic Head of the Charles. Races are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
