LEXINGTON, Ky. (EMUEalges.com) - The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team opened the 2017-18 season against the University of Kentucky, Saturday, Oct. 14. In their first dual loss since dropping to Ohio State, Nov. 14, 2015, the Eagles were handed a 174-124 defeat by the Wildcats.
Following an Eastern first-place finish in the 200 medley relay, junior Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) kept the Eagles on track in the 1650 freestyle, placing second with a time of 16:58.17.
The Wildcats answered back, sweeping the 200 free. In the 100 backstroke, sophomore Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Gross Pointe South) posted a third-place finish, clocking in at 56.45.
On the heels of a second-place finish by junior Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) in the 100 breaststroke, junior Emilie Desnoyers (St. Alberta) and freshman Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) snagged a pair of top-three finishes in the 200 butterfly. Desnoyers, coming in second, touched in at 2:06.39, while Rapien followed close behind at 2:07.22.
The Green and White earned its first individual win of the afternoon in the form of junior Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.) in the 50 free, touching in at 23.79.
Johnston then posted a third place finish in the 100 free before Young claimed third in the 200 back, just edging out sophomore Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) for a top-three finish.
Swartz, clocking in at 5:00.93, nabbed a third place finish in the 500 free before Eastern earned its first sweep of the day in the 100 fly. Led by junior Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel, Begin) with a time of 56.78, senior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown) and Desnoyers came in right behind at 58.16 and 59.37, respectively.
Eastern rounded out the individual events with another sweep in the 400 individual medley. In her debut as an Eagle, freshman Carlee Jones (Edgewood, Ky.-Notre Dame Academy) earned her first top-finish with a time of 4:28.04. Swartz clocked second at 4:37.85 while freshman Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) followed in third at 4:39.15.
The Green and White added another sweep in the 200 free relay down the stretch, but it was not enough to lift the Eagles to victory, as they fell 174-124.
On the springboard, sophomore Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) led the squad posting a third and fourth-place finish on the 3- and 1-meters, respectively. Freshman Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio / Glen Este) had her EMU debut on both the 1- and 3-meter dives in today's meet.
EMU returns to the pool next weekend when it travels to Ohio to take on Denison, Oct. 21. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. at the Trumbull Aquatics Center.
