Eagles Wrap Up Day at Simmons-Harvey Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team wrapped up competition at the Harvey-Simmons Invitational today, Jan. 14, in Ann Arbor. The Eagles had a solid day in the early-season meet, totaling a number of career-bests across the board.
"We had some nice highlights, but also some areas where we were lacking sharpness," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "The sprinters and hurdlers had a good day, and we will look forward to adding Jessica Harris to the mix soon. We need improvement in some other areas in the coming weeks, but I feel good about where we are at as a team, and we'll be looking forward to getting better in all event areas with every weekend."
Freshman Brittni Mason (Richmond Heights, Ohio – West Geauga) had a strong performance in the 60m dash prelims, finishing third with a career-best time of 7.74 seconds to earn a spot in the finals. Junior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) also turned in a top-10 finish in the prelims, taking 10th in 8.03, which was also a personal-best. Mason performed even better in the finals, taking second with a career-best time of 7.64.
In the 200m, junior Jasmine Jones (Greensburg, Pa. – Hempfield Area) finished with the gold, clocking in at 24.50. Mason followed up her strong 60m performance with another in the 200m, taking second in 25.59 seconds. Moving to the 400m, Jones was the team's top sprinter once again, taking second in 56.14 seconds, which was a career-best for the indoor season. Freshman Micah Johnston also finished in the top-five, taking fourth with a time of 58.22.
Junior Rebekah Branham (Circleville, Ohio – Circleville) turned in a ninth-place finish in the 800m, clocking in at 2:18.08. Fellow junior Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. – Rockford Lutheran) narrowly missed a top-10 finish, taking 11th in 2:20.98. A pair of Eagles narrowly missed out on a top-10 finish in the mile, as junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. – Davison) and senior Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia – Lyceum #83) took 11th and 12th with times of 4:54.85 and 4:56.42, respectively.
In the 3000m, sophomore Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind. – Zionsville Community) ran away with the race, finishing in first with a career-best time of 9:48.44, which was also good for ninth in the EMU record books. Fellow junior Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. – Seaholm) also finished in the top-five, nabbing fourth in 10:08.42.
In the 60m hurdles, two Eagles ran away with the prelims, as junior Allyson Goff (White Lake, Mich. – Walled Lake Northern) earned a spot to the finals after posting a time of 8.62 seconds in the prelims. Narrowly behind her, junior Tifani Byrd (Toms River, N.J. – Toms River North) nabbed second in 8.76, also earning a finals berth. Like the prelims, Goff won the finals with a time of 8.50, which was a career-best and the seventh-best in program history, while Byrd took the bronze in 8.69.
The group of James, Hurd, Cizmas, and Johnston ran to a second-place finish in the 4x400m relay, clocking in at 3:54.69. Moving to the high jump, freshman Aleah Bailey (Castalia, Ohio – Margaretta) was EMU's lone finisher, taking sixth with a personal-best jump of 1.60 meters/ 5 feet 3-inches. The pole vault saw sophomore Rebekah Carr (Celina, Ohio – Celina) and freshman Kristine Bourg (Sherwood, Ill. – Joliet West) take 10th and 12th, respectively, vaulting 3.10 meters/ 10 feet 2-inches, with that being a personal-best for Bourg.
Eastern turned in another solid performance in the long jump, with Goff securing third-place with a career-best jump of 5.58 meters/ 18 feet 3.75-inches. Fellow freshman Gianna Salzbrunn (North Aurora, Ill. – Montini Catholic) also finished in the top-10, snagging eighth with a mark of 5.39 meters/ 17 feet 8.25-inches. Junior Dace Dreimane (Ventspils, Latvia - Ventspils Gymnasium No. 1) secured the victory in the triple jump, winning the event with a mark of 12.12 meters/ 39 feet 9.25-inches.
Finally, sophomore Morgan Turner (Norwalk, Ohio – Norwalk) had a career-best mark in the weight throw, taking ninth with a toss of 15.39 meters/ 50 feet 6.25-inches, which was sixth-best in program history. Senior Megan Pendleton (Lindsey, Ohio – Woodmoore) finished four spots behind Turner, snagging 13th with a mark of 13.98 meters/ 45 feet 10.75-inches.
The Eagles next head back to Allendale, Mich. for the GVSU Open, Friday, Jan. 20.
