Despite knotting things up, the Eagle fell
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped a five set match in its second contest of the 2016 Mid-American Conference schedule. The Eagles (6-9, 1-1 MAC) were able to tie it up after four sets, but ultimately fell to the Cardinals (6-10, 2-0 MAC), 25-20, 14-25, 25-15, 20-25, 15-11.
Eastern's offense was led by junior Kelly Ferguson (Lemont, Ill.-Lemont (Austin Peay)) who posted 12 kills, while making just four errors for a .364 attack percentage. Freshman Riley Taylor (Indianpolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) grabbed a team high 32 assists, while Freshman Camille Schomer (Rochester, Mich.-Oakland Christian) notched a career-hight 26 digs in the five set contest. Sophomore Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) grabbed a double-double by picking up 10 kills and a best of 19 digs.
The Eagles fell behind early, dropping set one 25-20, but return-fired with a 25-14 victory in set two, knotting the match at one set apiece. Ball State was dominant in set three, grabbing a 25-15 win, but the Eagles were not deterred, taking set four, 25-20, to even up the match yet again. The Cardinals were eventually able to eek out the victory by grabbing a 15-11 set in the final frame of the match.
Eastern returns to the hardwood at home Friday, Sept. 30, when the Eagles sqaure off with Western Michigan. The match is slated for 7 p.m. and can be streamed live on ESPN 3 or the WatchESPN app.
